  • Sapphire Crystal iPhone 6 Display Holds Up Well After Knife and Key Test

After the release of a video showcasing the supposed flexible iPhone 6 sapphire display, a new video by YouTuber Marques Brownlee shows a more in depth durability test. The sapphire panel is not only bent by Brownlee, but it goes through a test with a knife and set of keys as well. The test was an attempt to leave scratch marks on the panel.

The video starts off with a look at the sapphire crystal display that is supposed to be the display for the next generation iPhone. The glass is an extremely clear piece that is demonstrated in the video- it is also the piece currently used in the iPhone 5s Touch ID sensor and camera lens. In the latter part of the video, Brownlee takes out a pocket knife and some keys to perform a quick test on the panel’s surface. After failing to leave any scratch marks on the glass, he does a bend test.

After a few tests, it seems like the sapphire crystal display held up extremely well. Although, we’re sure Apple doesn't just rely on these few tests in deciding what type of material should be used for the upcoming devices. Take a look at the video above and decide for yourself if this will make a good iPhone 6 display.

I'm guessing that's near shatter proof. Now to work on the dust/water proofing, Apple.

Honestly that is near impossible to do. Nothing can be water proof without completely sealing all holes on the device.

Sapphire crystals have been used on the faces of watches for decades. There's even a TISSOT touch screen watch with a sapphire crystal.

You'd need a diamond to scratch them. Nothing to see here.

I'm surprised this wasn't part of the original iPhone considering Apple's "status."

      LOL!
I've only broken one screen but that's when I was doing a full front/back swap on an ip4S. The 'delicate' nature of the device won't be as much of an issue, though, which is great!

Honestly, if you dropped your phone on the ground, not having to worry about a cracked screen would be a nice!

It doesn't have to be water proof.. water resistant like the Galaxy S5 would be fine. It'd be nice to not worry about water spilling on my phone or dropping it in some water by accident.

Wasn't some company (Apple,Samsung) looking at a spray that waterproofs the inner components? I thought I remember seeing that years ago.

Seriously, I just got though replacing my wife's iPhone 5 front glass display assembly. Her iPhone 5 with an otterbox "DEFENDER" installed, fell 4ft off the table onto tile and shattered. The irony kills. 😫

Can't wait!!! However, people are going to watch all these videos and STILL be disappointed when Apple doesn't completely shock them and come out with something even more amazing.

There was a waterproofing service that did something like that a couple years ago... Looked interesting.

I, for one, think that's pretty freakin amazing!!! Paper-thin glass that won't break when you bend it! WHAT?!?! Even my wife was impressed and she isn't into technology!
