  • iPhone 4 Proximity Sensor Malfunctions Reported

Increasing numbers of iPhone 4 users are reporting the touchscreen becoming active during phone calls when the proximity sensor would normally shut it off, leading to inadvertent button-presses. The reports are coming in with enough frequency and consistency to suspect a hardware or calibration issue with at least a particular subset of iPhones. No word from Apple yet.

The iPhone's proximity sensor uses a small infrared LED and uses the reflection from nearby objects to deactivate the touchscreen when it's close to your head. If you hold it up to an iSight or other camera that can read near infrared light, you can usually just see the glow. The problem may be in how sensitive the detector is set to be on some phones or an actual problem with the detector. So far I haven't noticed it with my own phone, if I make a call and hold a finger in front of the sensor with my finger the screen deactivates out to about an inch away.

An email from a MMi member this morning reported hearing keypress tones during calls, and in one instance his phone tried to initiate a FaceTime call while he had the iPhone to his head. There's an Apple Support thread with forty-one posts as of the time of this writing, most with similar reports. One user says the display activates when he rocks it from side to side.

    Anyone out there seeing this?

Only issue i had was when i first got it and restored from Itunes from my 3.1.3 set up on my 3GS... the carrier logo stayed the same with my custom setting and.. i could not get the internet to work on 3g or edge.. So restored as a new phone and since then have had no issues what so ever..

not even signal problems or prox sensor issues... i will say this auto dim suxs balls so i just turned it off..

I don't doubt there are bugs still.. i mean what new OS and or hardware these days dosent....

its the price you pay sometimes being first...

ill deal and just watch a good thing get better

hey guys this may take care of the problem. Report back if it does. Go to settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings.. See if that helps, think it has worked for others

Dam so they should be giving the bumper case away for free to every iPhone 4 purchase just to make up for their incompetence.

Same here.. It still works and even putting my finger over it turns off the display around an inch above. Problem is that there is something definitely different on the new iphone 4. My face hits the mute or number keys a lot. this never happened on the other 5 iphones i have had.

It's funny this came up, because when I 1st got my phone I was resting it on my shoulder and my face while I was doing other things and I ended a call but I figured it just wasnt close enough to my face and thats what happened. Then I was doing the same thing and I activated a face time call! this is probably my problem

I am hoping that the next batch that are being sold on the 29th are better with less problems.

OHHHHH WOW THIS IS HILARIOUS. This phone keeps getting better by the day!!!! i love hearing those who do crazy configurations and adjustments to get this thing working properly hahaha never that, i would just throw that pz of crap against the wall or something. Next thing you know, apple is going to sell you a bumper for the front too.

To all those people who fueled the Fire, you are at fault, now your burning.
Apple release a new handset every year because it sells to existing iphone users, I reckon 80% of iphone 4 buyers will be upgrading from a previous version - they deliberately hold back features to ensure maximum sales on the next release.

Anyone else wondering why white iphone 4 is not available yet, worldwide shortage of white paint maybe? More like check out the all new iphone 4 in white this fall, now with 64gb storage and a working proximmity sensor.

i think it's just because people restore it from their old iPhone backups...
when i went from my 2G to 3GS i also had random problems when i restored from the old backup but a fresh restore with setting it up as a new phone fixed everything :P

I'm sure our battery issue is to do with software not reading the battery correct. Even thou the battery shows low I'm still getting tons more mileage on a single charge.
I have the battery issue as well....I am already at 71% with an hour of moderate usage and 7 hours of standby time. I am going to the Apple Store tomorrow to talk to see if my friend can figure out the problem.

No issues here at all. I have no yellow screen, no battery issues, no reception issues, no proximity sensor issues. My phone is working perfectly and I'm loving it!!!

I'm really sorry to hear so many people are having issues, I went through that with my iPad and wifi issues, the good news was that Apple was VERY good about replacing it until I had a fully working unit.

If you're super pissed, just return it and ask for a refund. Otherwise try to be patient till they work all these issues out. Apple has really good customer service in general, I'm sure they will ,ake this right for everyone eventually.

Hey hacktarded1, on your battery life how long does it take for your i4 battery to drop down to 85% and what do you do? Thanks

      Lol random...?

I'm surprised all the Apple fanboys aka mods aren't posting often on these "issues with iPhone 4" problem, I guess they're in denial...

I doubt the iPhone 4 is having all these issues tbh. What about battery life? I don't see it being any better than the 3GS, this is going of the battery specs from Apple's website.

Why would three respected journalists claim incredible iPhone battery life when it’s simply not the truth.

Found this article posted today about other people having the same battery issues.
