  • Say What?! iPhone 4 Loses Reception Bars When Held by the Antenna Band?

    Talk about holding one's calls.

Apparently, if you hold the iPhone 4 by the antenna band, you'll lose your bars, your reception, and maybe even your call. As this video making the rounds showcases, holding the handset with your fingers pressed upon the antenna throws off your cell reception and effectively reduces your bars all the way down, in some cases, to zero.

Of course, it isn't yet clear if the real issue relates to an inaccurate showing of bars or a significant problem with the actual antenna. But as thousands unbox their iPhone 4s and activate the long awaited updated smartphone, you may want to give your device the finger so to speak and play the home game version of this video demonstration.

But as Paul noted earlier in his piece "iPhone 4 Screen Defects Reported," in every new product, manufacturing defects are almost inevitable. So as scattered but undocumented complaints similarly surface, there's a good chance we'll know in the coming hours and days if this example is an isolated incident (and let's hope that it is)... or if this is the first real bug and potential nightmare for the 4th generation iPhone and its customers.

I know this is beating a dead horse, but I posted earlier that I was not having problems, well at home I have a solid signal. In visiting places today that I frequent I used to have 80% coverage there. I mean 8 out of 10 calls were no problem. Depending on the weather I guess I may have a bad day and have to walk to another part of the building or outside to complete calls.

Now these areas I can barely use my phone. I have to stand on one foot and hold it in the air,(doesn't help but I try anyway) It seems that 3G is worse, I hadn't thought of disabling it for now. I am going to make a trip to At&t tomorrow.

I like the phone, I had real expectations with the new antennas that I could have better coverage, not worse.

Apple has to fix this, there is a real problem, and admit it most of us bought apple products because they are good. Thats the only reason to pay the premium price they charge. I have always been ok with it, I knew that I could get help with my problems and get fixed.

We need a survey of the problem phones.

      Where did you buy.
      Pre-order yes/no
      Time and date (if Preorder)
Time and date (delivery if preorder)
      Location, County/ State or Province

      I will start

      At&t Online
      Yes, Pre-order
      June 15 8:30 am EDST
Fedex delivery June 23 10:00 am EDST
      USA / North Carolina

Will a pattern develop. ADMIN is there a way to set up a poll to gather this?

There's a difference between losing 2-3 bars and losing signal completely. I'm paying a premium for phone service and don't ever want to see my phone in "NO SERVICE" for whatever reason.

50 Minutes on the phone with apple just to be told they are looking into it. No offer to replace it, not offer of a bumper, or the suggestion of a case. The first guy knew about the issue from an email, but he still had to send me to a tier 2 guy to enter a case, which took a half hour to get someone. Pretty disappointing.

BTW I dropped the call twice waiting for the first guy spacing off and putting my hand on the corner. I don't get why left handed people complain. I am right handed and hold the phone in my left so i can dial/navigate with my right. They should be the happy/lucky ones.

      Just to add more "data" to the conversation;
My 3G with iOS4 drops from 5 to 2/1 bar in hand without case(never noticed this before).
My wife's 3G not yet on iOS4 drops NO bars.
With 2 iPhone 4's on pre-oder I've got my fingers (and toes) crossed that a fix is out before our phones arrive mid July.

-Side note: If I bought a condom (ahem bumper) from apple with my pre-order, can i get a refund since they are currently throwing them at this problem for free???

I would have to say you should! And Apple better start throwing these bumpers in the box just to avoid the call that they KNOW their gonna get... lol

This is definitely an issue in the upper tiers of Apple now.
I just got off the phone with Apple support, they are very aware of this.
they did not offer me a free bumper, but they are working on it.
since it's not happening to 100% of the phones, I suspect some kind of manufacturing error. that's just my guess.
There are issues with all kinds of high tech products when they are released.
you can guarantee Apple will do something about this.
      ANY company would.
we need to have patience that they will fix the issue.
      I will.
I can do the tape fix until they do.
I wanna take this thing apart SOOO bad...
      not gonna tho...

I think suing over this is a bit much. They'll fix it. The way I look at it, we have 2 options... Send/take the phone back tomorrow and wait a month for them to figure it out and get new phones out, or use up part of our "30 days return policy" and give them a few weeks to get a fix out to us if they're able.

Yeah, considering the phone came out TODAY, I think it's a little early to say Apple isn't doing anything about it.

Again, iPhone 4 officially launched TODAY.

I've been learning to operate around it, just by holding it certain ways while talking on the phone and so far im not having many problems.

Dont wait for them to offer the bumper, just simple say that you want one shipped to you at no cost to you now.

Why did apple not know this? They have some of the smartest engineers working for them and they did not know that HUMAN=Ground.

The only way to quick fix this would be to get some type of Insulator between you and the metal antenna band.
Get a iPhone case in other words..

      Well this is just great..
As stated by many other people Apple know about this and that is why they have their so called bumper cover. Notice how it only covers the antenna part? Apples not dumb but they think we are. So I guess it does make Apple look dumb after all. It's all about money.

Not really. Your some what forced to buy the bumper to avoid the signal issue. And I'm sure Apple knew this. That is why Apple was the only place to get the bumper. Knowing is a crime.

They have the nerve to charge us $30 for a piece of s*** rubber that don't cost more than .30 cent to make. I could buy a damn nice case for $30.
