  • Say What?! iPhone 4 Loses Reception Bars When Held by the Antenna Band?

    Talk about holding one's calls.

Apparently, if you hold the iPhone 4 by the antenna band, you'll lose your bars, your reception, and maybe even your call. As this video making the rounds showcases, holding the handset with your fingers pressed upon the antenna throws off your cell reception and effectively reduces your bars all the way down, in some cases, to zero.

Of course, it isn't yet clear if the real issue relates to an inaccurate showing of bars or a significant problem with the actual antenna. But as thousands unbox their iPhone 4s and activate the long awaited updated smartphone, you may want to give your device the finger so to speak and play the home game version of this video demonstration.

But as Paul noted earlier in his piece "iPhone 4 Screen Defects Reported," in every new product, manufacturing defects are almost inevitable. So as scattered but undocumented complaints similarly surface, there's a good chance we'll know in the coming hours and days if this example is an isolated incident (and let's hope that it is)... or if this is the first real bug and potential nightmare for the 4th generation iPhone and its customers.

This sucks. I've only ever gotten 1 bar at work on my 2G and 3Gs. This 4G gets 1 bar as well, but wouldn't you guess it, the anntenna location is EXACTLY where I put one of my fingers while talking. This leads to an instant dropped call.
Might just have to return this in the 30 days. Or is it 15 days?

Before jumping to conclusions, those of you with a 3GS, like me.and have NOT yet upgraded to ios4 ( I'm still on 3.1.2). Remove any cases you have and do the sane test! My bars certainly drop when held in the left hand so that the bottom corner is nestled and touching the palm. They come back when removing this grip, and they don't disappear when holding glass or in right hand. Remember, THIS IS 3GS ON 3.1.2!!! Just try it!

Just called Apple tech support and im getting a new iphone in 2 days. Mine has an issue that the proximity sensor is f'ed up and when i pull the phone away from my face it doesnt light up with the screen so i cant use facetime, speaker, or pad or use anything else while on a call. Whatever but at least theyre taking care of it

i have not seen that problem on my iphone 4 at all. i wonder if it is really a hardware issue, if so i think i would be having the same problem. I do have a case on mine so maybe thats what is helping mine. Nope, it still works fine with the case off..HMMMMM, dont know

I know some people are saying it's a software issue, but we are all on iOS4... if that were the case wouldn't everyone on iOS4 have the problem?

That's why I am leaning to a manufacturing hardware defect with the way the antennae are grounded.

So if 3GS is doing the samething then im guessing this is a iOS 4 issue?

So heres my vid - iPhone 4 -- comments HERE please.

The vid is 3 mins long... its only as it gets about half way through and a change of grip I seem to have an effect.

But I have to say I personally think its negligible and atm im not bothered. If I notice calls dropping etc once Ive used it some more then ill complain

      Anyways: heres the vid...

Well, I live in central NJ. Im in my basement & covers every bit of the edge as I could & no bar change, still 5 bars & 3G. So this is a spotty problem for apple.

If I hold my phone by the band in the first post my phone does the same thing.
However if I put my silicon case on it that I used on my 3gs I dont lose my bars at all.
