  • Jailbreaking & Unlocking iOS 4 : What You Should Know
Note: This Post will be udpated as news becomes available. Please share your experiences in this thread. It is highly suggested you do not update to iOS 4 right away. Please be patient.

Today, as expected, Apple released iOS 4 to the public. But before you get too excited, there are some things you should know before updating to iOS 4. If you want to play Jailbreak with your iDevice, make sure you read through this.

iOS 4 is compatible with the 3G, 3GS, the newest iPod Touch and iPhone 4. Those of you that have played with the GM release, the build number on this public release is exactly the same; 8A293. So as for changes since the GM there are none in this release.

    Update:

    Jailbreaking

iPhone3GS & iPod3G owners (especially if you used Spirit for your first JB) should stay away from iOS4 for now

Wizdaz has kept the community in the know, informing us that PwnageTool is currently being updated as we speak. PwnageTool 4.0 will support the iPhone 3G (with Pwnage exploit), iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 2G (both with 24kPwn exploit). Keep in mind this means no support for the newer bootom. Remember the tethered days? If that was you, then you will need to wait until Spirit is updated or a new tool is updated for such.

There is of course the Redsn0w option if you have a 3G, but stay away from any custom packages. The Dev-Team has written it well, and because of their credibility, here is exactly what they say

We are working hard on a release to our tools that will jailbreak your device (or give you iOS 4 via the jailbreak train) and provide you with a carrier unlock.

Until these tools are released you should hold off on updating your device until we have fully tested our tools with all the relevant devices.

If you rely on hacktivation or a carrier unlock (ultrasn0w) then you should not upgrade until we have fully tested and released our tools.

Don’t be tempted with unofficial PwnageTool/redsn0w bundles or releases, just check here or our team twitter for real time release information.

Remember, we risk our devices so you don’t have to (but this time anyone who has made a mistake upgrading their baseband firmware at 3.1.3 or 4.0 should be OK real soon Now!

    Unlocking iOS 4

The iPhone Dev Team has released ultrasn0w 0.93 for unlocking your new iOS 4. Simply add the Cydia repo: repo666.ultrasn0w.com. This version of ultrasn0w will unlock basebands 04.26.08 thru 05.13.04. If your unsure, that means that ultrasn0w unlocks ALL basebands since iPhone OS 3.1. Even more specifically, 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.15.01, and 05.13.04. Remember to disable 3G on T-Mobile USA.

So on the unlocking front, you're pretty much golden. However it's still recommend to wait just a little bit longer before making the plunge for iOS 4.

Not "may", having a wallpaper WITHOUT shadows slows down a 3G.
A wallpaper WITH shadows slows down a 3G by A LOT.
Multitasking slows down a 3G, but only slightly.

Overall, I haven't had any speed problems and don't blame the FW just because your phone runs slow. Mine has no problems besides the ones listed above. Oh and iBooks, but I could care less.

^^@Achy, my 3G is only 7 months old, I highly doubt it's problems with MY phone. I had no issues with prior firmware. Apple even knew the FW wouldn't run well with IOS4. U can deny it all u want though, I have less than 24 hours left playing with my 3G. Bring on the 512MB of RAM

The issue is APPLE's retarded way of multitasking.

How it should of been done is 'double tap' home button, screen pulls up with list of all your apps, pick one, it creates a multi instance of both apps, tap the home button twice again pick another app, and now u have another instance of an app. exit out of that app normally and that app is no longer active, etc.

instead they have it set where whatever app you click on stays on. STUPID!

and all these little fixes and they couldnt put a close button for the keyboard in text messaging...
      ugh....

Can i go back to 3.1.3? i'd rather use backgrounder.

So you're telling me that iOS4 is just unstable and bad because you enabled stuff that wasn't meant for the 3G to begin with? Don't get multitasking, nor wallpaper, then see it's speed.

@DmVinny, yeah when I saw that the freaking apps stayed open I was like WTF!! I double clicked home and I had like 7 apps still running. Backgrounder is a whole lot better because u can choose if u want it to stay open. And yes u can go back to 3.1.3, I'm back on it now.

By the way, I'm back on 3.1.3 and IOS4 makes this firmware look like it's a stock iPhone with the speed difference. No lag at all

@Jasonm253, u can actually go back with iTunes 9.2. That's what I used to do it and it actually worked. I was suprised.

Im jailbreak on 3.1.3 with Spirit and I installed ultrasn0w to test if it works, and it does, works great with T-Mobile SIM, only one problem... Cydia is stock with a Change badge, I go to it, it says its ultrasn0w, I update, and then, it keeps showing the badge and the update for ultrasn0w, Im about to delete ultras0w from the phone to see if this fix the problem, anyone else with this??? anyone knows why this happen???

      Hey few quick question guys:
      1. I AM using spirit jb but did not for my 1st and am pretty sure i have old bootrom as my jb back then was untethered.
      2. If I AM good to go, where is a safe reliable place to download the ISO? I have tried downloading through itunes, connection always craps up before the download finishes
      3. I have searched for the PwnageTool 4.0 but it comes out as a dmg and after extracting with powerISO i am then lost as what to do.

      Any help guys?

Yea dood, i know your trying to help, but 5 word sentences don't actually help all that much, what's an .ipsw? Could you try explaining it? And I AM aware you can find links off google, what I'm after is a reliable link, one that's the latest version of OS 4 and from a well known, respectable website - would grab it off xsellize but the links are not under the firmware section

So there's no option whether or not you want to close the app or background it? I'm worried i'll just forget to close apps and have my phone's battery die in 10 minutes!

Also can someone help me with a way (if there is yet) to JB iOS4 on 3gs with:

      model: MC131x
      Modem Firmware: 05.13.04

      EDIT:
I used Spirit to do it on 3.1.3 around about 3 weeks ago and it was easy as pie, if there is a way can it be as easy as this again?

^ Of course there is a way to close the apps. You open up multitasking, hold your finger on the icon and click on close/stop.
