  • Jailbreaking & Unlocking iOS 4 : What You Should Know
Note: This Post will be udpated as news becomes available. Please share your experiences in this thread. It is highly suggested you do not update to iOS 4 right away. Please be patient.

Today, as expected, Apple released iOS 4 to the public. But before you get too excited, there are some things you should know before updating to iOS 4. If you want to play Jailbreak with your iDevice, make sure you read through this.

iOS 4 is compatible with the 3G, 3GS, the newest iPod Touch and iPhone 4. Those of you that have played with the GM release, the build number on this public release is exactly the same; 8A293. So as for changes since the GM there are none in this release.

    Update:

    Jailbreaking

iPhone3GS & iPod3G owners (especially if you used Spirit for your first JB) should stay away from iOS4 for now

Wizdaz has kept the community in the know, informing us that PwnageTool is currently being updated as we speak. PwnageTool 4.0 will support the iPhone 3G (with Pwnage exploit), iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 2G (both with 24kPwn exploit). Keep in mind this means no support for the newer bootom. Remember the tethered days? If that was you, then you will need to wait until Spirit is updated or a new tool is updated for such.

There is of course the Redsn0w option if you have a 3G, but stay away from any custom packages. The Dev-Team has written it well, and because of their credibility, here is exactly what they say

We are working hard on a release to our tools that will jailbreak your device (or give you iOS 4 via the jailbreak train) and provide you with a carrier unlock.

Until these tools are released you should hold off on updating your device until we have fully tested our tools with all the relevant devices.

If you rely on hacktivation or a carrier unlock (ultrasn0w) then you should not upgrade until we have fully tested and released our tools.

Don’t be tempted with unofficial PwnageTool/redsn0w bundles or releases, just check here or our team twitter for real time release information.

Remember, we risk our devices so you don’t have to (but this time anyone who has made a mistake upgrading their baseband firmware at 3.1.3 or 4.0 should be OK real soon Now!

    Unlocking iOS 4

The iPhone Dev Team has released ultrasn0w 0.93 for unlocking your new iOS 4. Simply add the Cydia repo: repo666.ultrasn0w.com. This version of ultrasn0w will unlock basebands 04.26.08 thru 05.13.04. If your unsure, that means that ultrasn0w unlocks ALL basebands since iPhone OS 3.1. Even more specifically, 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.15.01, and 05.13.04. Remember to disable 3G on T-Mobile USA.

So on the unlocking front, you're pretty much golden. However it's still recommend to wait just a little bit longer before making the plunge for iOS 4.

In regards to JB/Unlock of iOS 4 on a 3GS:

I'm currently jailbroken and unlocked on a 3GS on iOS 4. I did not use an official jailbreak, and used modded version of pwnage tool through msftguy's bundles.

The ultrasn0w unlock DOES work perfectly on 4.0. I'm on baseband 5.11.07, so once a real jailbreak comes through for the 3GS, I'm going to restore the newest baseband and try ultrasn0w out on that as well. The only issue I ran into is iOS 4 breaks MMS for T-Mobile. Spooky and I (mostly him, haha) have come to the conclusion that the unofficial jailbreak doesn't patch the areas where APN and IPCC settings need to be signed. So the OS sees unsigned APNs and doesn't allow proper MMS to work - my specific problem is not being able to receive any MMS due to "size restrictions".

I basically just want to confirm that ultrasn0w, as well as blacksn0w RC2 for that matter, will BOTH unlock at least 5.11.07 on 4.0. All we need is a jailbreak...so 3GSers can try the unofficial jailbreak, which I don't recommend, or just wait it out. I'd wager to see we'll see a JB within the next week since iPhone 4 is about to drop.

It's not recommended to update to 4.0 if you've used Spirit for an untethered jailbreak.

I don't think MMi codones warez or cracked apps, so ask elsewhere. There are plenty of other forums to find that out. Hell, even google would answer your second question.

I'm just curious, could someone explain to me why people with iPhone 3GS's can't jailbreak their iPhone's with 4.0, when they're currently able to jailbreak using Spirit? My girlfriend has a 3GS, that I'm sure she'll want to upgrade to 4.0 to use the new features. It's already jailbroken using Spirit. Any reason why Spirit wouldn't be able to jailbreak the phone after the 4.0 upgrade? If someone could explain this issue concisely, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Most jailbreak programs only work with 1 firmware version. New firmware, new jailbreak program. Easy enough?

Oh, I see. So 3GS users cannot upgrade to iOS 4.0 at all? That sucks.

It will never work unless you either live without a jailbreak or they change it to work for 4.0 new and old boot. I'd stay on 3.x until snowbreeze or some jailbreak comes out, plus ive been to 4.0 mutitask sucks on that! Nothing like proswitcher. The look is cool, but not real multitasking. Character count would be helpful if i had ATT :P

      Hope this somewhat helped!

Well do NOT update to iOS4 if you are jailbroken on 3.1.3 using Spirit. If you do, you will not be able to get on internet, mail, and everything else that requires the internet usage. If someone has a solution, then please let me know. I updated without reading (stupid of me, i know)

ok well i did mine with spirit. i read off different pages that i shouldnt upgrade my os till new jb tools are released. but this was after i actually upgraded.

what are the known consequences of upgrading from a spirit jailbreak?

Known issues after upgrade from spirit jb. I was running 3.1.3 3GS spirit jb and upgraded to 4.0. After upgrade I had no Internet connection. I had to restore and set up as a new iPhone vs restoring from backup to get Internet connection. Things seem to be working fine now but I haven't installed any apps. If ur running a jb'n phone don't update yet like they say, it's really not worth it anyways

ok i could try that. when you completely restore it, do you lose all the contacts even if you back up -

when i jbed my phone before and my itouch, i kept getting error messages after doing restores and i lost all the information

thanks to everyone who has been working on this! I really appreciate it. I have read every post and feel much more confident in doing this but i wonder if someone can confirm the steps for me?

      1.download redsnow 0.9.5b5-3
      2.download the firmware 8A293
3.connect iphone to itunes and upgrade to 4.0 via itunes
4.once upgraded, turn off phone but leave connected to computer
5.start redsnow, select firmware that i downloaded
      6.follow instructions on screen
7.once rebooted go to cydia, then sources
      8.add repo666.ultrasn0w.com as a source

after i do this my iphone 3g should be unlocked and ready to use on the tmobile network?

      thanks for everything once again!

      Kind Regards
      Brett Day
