  • Jailbreaking & Unlocking iOS 4 : What You Should Know
Note: This Post will be udpated as news becomes available. Please share your experiences in this thread. It is highly suggested you do not update to iOS 4 right away. Please be patient.

Today, as expected, Apple released iOS 4 to the public. But before you get too excited, there are some things you should know before updating to iOS 4. If you want to play Jailbreak with your iDevice, make sure you read through this.

iOS 4 is compatible with the 3G, 3GS, the newest iPod Touch and iPhone 4. Those of you that have played with the GM release, the build number on this public release is exactly the same; 8A293. So as for changes since the GM there are none in this release.

    Update:

    Jailbreaking

iPhone3GS & iPod3G owners (especially if you used Spirit for your first JB) should stay away from iOS4 for now

Wizdaz has kept the community in the know, informing us that PwnageTool is currently being updated as we speak. PwnageTool 4.0 will support the iPhone 3G (with Pwnage exploit), iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 2G (both with 24kPwn exploit). Keep in mind this means no support for the newer bootom. Remember the tethered days? If that was you, then you will need to wait until Spirit is updated or a new tool is updated for such.

There is of course the Redsn0w option if you have a 3G, but stay away from any custom packages. The Dev-Team has written it well, and because of their credibility, here is exactly what they say

We are working hard on a release to our tools that will jailbreak your device (or give you iOS 4 via the jailbreak train) and provide you with a carrier unlock.

Until these tools are released you should hold off on updating your device until we have fully tested our tools with all the relevant devices.

If you rely on hacktivation or a carrier unlock (ultrasn0w) then you should not upgrade until we have fully tested and released our tools.

Don’t be tempted with unofficial PwnageTool/redsn0w bundles or releases, just check here or our team twitter for real time release information.

Remember, we risk our devices so you don’t have to (but this time anyone who has made a mistake upgrading their baseband firmware at 3.1.3 or 4.0 should be OK real soon Now!

    Unlocking iOS 4

The iPhone Dev Team has released ultrasn0w 0.93 for unlocking your new iOS 4. Simply add the Cydia repo: repo666.ultrasn0w.com. This version of ultrasn0w will unlock basebands 04.26.08 thru 05.13.04. If your unsure, that means that ultrasn0w unlocks ALL basebands since iPhone OS 3.1. Even more specifically, 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.15.01, and 05.13.04. Remember to disable 3G on T-Mobile USA.

So on the unlocking front, you're pretty much golden. However it's still recommend to wait just a little bit longer before making the plunge for iOS 4.

Oh and the reason you can't go and ssh and delete the files is because the updates are things that if deleted will brick the phone. Mobilesubstrate... Libhide, etc
Not for me. I'm on a 3gs and I upgraded Cydia first, then resprung and then updated mobilesubstrate. Apparently Saurik released the updates for ios4 that was released today and not for 3.1.3. So i guess that's why I went into the infinite loop during a respring after updating mobilesubstrate. When I upgraded both of them it said that the updates were compatible with my os in cydia.

I went back to cydia to check and see if everyone thing was ok but cydia returned a bunch of errors. All I know is that something screwed up when I updated mobilesubstrate.

I don't want to have to re-jailbreak my phone, I have too much to download again from cydia if I do. I might as well just wait for the 4.0 jailbreak.
Got me too. I rebooted and hung at the apple logo. Did a restore and still don't have sbsettings or winterboard working.

Cydia however is more or less inert and will NOT install anything. it gives a POSIX connection refused. this is on wifi and 3G service... Im testing Rock right now. Oh and my theory for why it is messing it up is that he updated so many essential tweaks at once that they have some combined side effect on cydia.

Rock is confirmed to work. It can still have full functionality. GO ROCK
Same experience here..Do NOT download those updates from Cydia..my 3gs got screwed up,& I am having to restore again now

I think I'm going to go back to 3.1.3 and just unlock it from there. 4.0 is awesome but I feel like its taking forever for a jailbreak. Ya, I'm that impatient sorry

What if you have a 3GS that was JB with blackra1n? Can it be JB'd with blackra1n on 4.0?

I had/have a 3gs on 3.1.3 05.12.01. I tried erasing everything through settings and after it was all erased, the phone got stuck on the Apple logo screen with the little wheel. I've read that this has happened because the phone was jailbroken. I've tried restoring to a custom 3.1.3 ipsw but I keep getting errors 1600 and 1600 in DFU and recovery mode. Is there a way for me to get my phone unbricked without having to upgrade to 4.0? (I don't want to upgrade because I need to jailbreak the phone and unlock it so I can sell it and get an iphone 4).

Also, my brother has a 3gs 3.1.3 on 05.12.01 that was also jailbroken with Spirit. How should he go about erasing all his stuff without bricking the phone like I did mine? He also wants to avoid upgrading to 4.0 because he wants to jailbreak/unlock then sell his phone.

But I installed winterboard with my first update to 4.0 like 5 hours ago and it was totally fine... but I think your right it is winterboard probably has something to do with the new Mobile substrate update

P.S. any way I can install winterboard and disable it.... a can't use sbsettings because winterboard forces safe mode soooo...

I will never again use Rock, NEVER.

I got the same issue as you did. I hit "Restart Springboard" & waited a good 15 to 20 min for the reboot, it never happened. So I forced the phone off by holding the Power & Home Buttons. Then it got stuck at the Apple Logo for a good 5 minutes. I forced the phone off again & then booted again. I stuck the phone in my pocket only to check it 10 minutes later & found myself back on the lockscreen (Yay!). I didn't try to install anything in cydia until the mobilesubstrate upgrade (guess it was the 2nd one) & everything is working fine.
