  • iPhone 4 Has 512MB RAM

Confirmation that the new iPhone has twice the RAM of the iPad or the iPhone 3GS has come from a recently released video of a developer session at WWDC 10. MacRumors first reported the revelation, which is the first acknowledgement from Apple that iPhone 4 has 512MB of RAM.

For a company that loves to dish out specs (highest pixel density of any smartphone, most energy efficient desktop, etc.), Apple sure is reticent when it comes to the amount of RAM in an iPhone. They've never publicized the memory specs, ever, and so we've had to wait for teardowns or leaks to find out, for, example, that the 3GS has 256MB of RAM. In the case of the iPhone 4, the assumption has been that the production phone has 256MB RAM, because that's how much memory was installed in the "lost-and-found" prototype when Gizmodo cracked it open, and how much the A4 chip on the iPad has.

Video of the session where the RAM capacity was revealed, Advanced Performance Optimization on iPhone OS part 2, was recently released to registered Apple developers for download via iTunes, but is not presently available due to high demand.

As MacRumors notes, this may explain why iMovie will only run on iPhone 4, and not the iPad.

Should you swap all your dvd collection to bluray, when there might be a new format in 5 years?

I bought an iphone 4g 32gb from the apple store on tuesday. If in 6 months they release a 64gb one, i'll ebay my 32gb and buy the 64gb. I could sit and wait for a better one from the start... But lifes too short!

Exactly, if your gonna wait then whats the point of buying it? There's ALWAYS something else that will be better, now if money's an issue thats another thing, but ya lifes to short, just enjoy it.

For those complaining about the storage (which I was disappointed in too) maybe you should do some research.

iPhone 4 = One 32 GB chip + gyro - smaller processor - smaller sim = room for either bigger battery or extra 32 GB chip (we obviously know what Apple chose)
      iPod Touch 3G = Two 32 GB chips = 64 GB total

Toshiba is just NOW starting to manufacture one single 64 GB chip and from what I have read they are having troubles making them in bulk. Also they are expensive (typically not how Apple roles). So it is looking more and more like iPod Touch 4G might have a max of two 32 GB chips for 64 GB total. We might not even see a 64 GB iPhone until a few years out.

Simply put, no one has been able to manufacture a single 64 GB chip in mass quantity at an Apple price point. Due to the low numbers they will be very expensive to produce right now and Apple would not be able to match stock demand for them.

      Knowledge is good people...

Honestly I think it depends on which of your options is more "low pro". In my case I think it's AT&T, although I an worried that their stock will be limited compared to Apple.

Fortunately I have a reserve at the Apple store as a backup plan
I have made up my mind, I am going to the Apple Store for sure..... I am just hoping THEY will have the white iPhone 4 on hand so I won't get crap from my wife that I got the new iPhone first........ AGAIN!!!!!

On a side note, I might wait for the white one, its not gonna show grease nearly as bad as the black one, and the white parts are under the glass, so dirt wont be a problem. Im also waiting to see how scratch resistant the glass will be.

The invisishield should be alot easier to install thanks to the flat surface!
I called my Apple Store here in Metairie, Louisiana and the Rep told me that they will have iPhones at the store but it's a first come first serve deal and when I asked about the white one she said that they don't know because they don't open the shipment until launch day....... I told her "Well that sucks!" She agreed with me.

I never did like the invisishield, I had a friend that put it on his 3G and he didn't do a very good job, it looked like crap..... I feel the glass will be as strong as they say and I don't plan on just tossing my new iPhone 4 around willy nilly.... This (as with most people on this site) will be my 4th iPhone and I haven't had a scratch on a single one of them.....

Exactly my point of view. And also people that are saying "wait till the prices go down" are actually not saving money if they're gonna buy all the generations because when they decide to sell their old phones they won't be able to sell it for much. But if you are keeping up with the upgrades you can sell your phone without losing too much and then can enjoy the next generation right away.

Wow. This is goddamn iPhone OS, not windows Vista. The necessary memory to run this is under 50mb. With the remaining memory you can run around 50 apps at the same time. Why the hell would you want more. I bet you're an HTC fanboy, who attempts to double Apple's specs but fails to replicate its performance.

To be fair, 512MB RAM is considered a standard feature nowadays. Nothing special. iPhone is never a performance phone and is a single task machine.

At the minimum, I think you need to upgrade your Apple battery power to match other phone maker before you even dare to say anything about performance.

Well in computers we have the capabilites to expand RAM to ridiculous amounts like 32GB. But do you really need that for personal use? Unless you're doing heavy graphic editing, you won't need more than 4GB. The same applies for the phones. Do you really need more than 512? I mean how many apps at the same time do you plan on using? Don't forget this is a phone after all. You'll kill your battery if you use anything over 500mb anyway. I really doubt they'll design a mobile game that hogs more than 512mb anytime soon. Apple's mobile ideas don't always do it first, but they do it the right way.

Actually, I'm not all that bothered about the HTC, although I'll admit it's a nice phone. Regardless of how many apps I could run at the same time, I'm sick of Apple giving us a little bit at a time, this iPhone 4 is the one they should have released back in 07, however I fully understand why they've done it this way, if you give someone a product that does everything, even wipe your arse, how do you top it? TBH the iPad was a disappointment. I'd rather have seen an iNetbook, OSX on a netbook would have ruled, even OSX on a tablet would have been nice.

Getting back to the topic. I just want a phone that is as responsive as the adverts say it is "Sequence shorten and steps removed" tells me THIS PRODUCT DOES NOT DO WHAT IT IS ADVERTISED AS DOING

4GB? Yeah right, maybe its Windows 7 or Linux, but I'm running 4GB RAM and a Quad Core Processor and I still get the occassional crash or slow opening program

I'm running 4GB with an i7 processor and I have yet to see a program crash. And programs don't necessarily crash because of low ram, but incompatibility, incorrect coding and many other reasons
