  • iPhone 4 Has 512MB RAM

Confirmation that the new iPhone has twice the RAM of the iPad or the iPhone 3GS has come from a recently released video of a developer session at WWDC 10. MacRumors first reported the revelation, which is the first acknowledgement from Apple that iPhone 4 has 512MB of RAM.

For a company that loves to dish out specs (highest pixel density of any smartphone, most energy efficient desktop, etc.), Apple sure is reticent when it comes to the amount of RAM in an iPhone. They've never publicized the memory specs, ever, and so we've had to wait for teardowns or leaks to find out, for, example, that the 3GS has 256MB of RAM. In the case of the iPhone 4, the assumption has been that the production phone has 256MB RAM, because that's how much memory was installed in the "lost-and-found" prototype when Gizmodo cracked it open, and how much the A4 chip on the iPad has.

Video of the session where the RAM capacity was revealed, Advanced Performance Optimization on iPhone OS part 2, was recently released to registered Apple developers for download via iTunes, but is not presently available due to high demand.

As MacRumors notes, this may explain why iMovie will only run on iPhone 4, and not the iPad.

I don't know about you, but having to drag every new album I download into an "iPhone Music" folder is a lot more annoying than just picking "Sync all music". Had the iPhone 4 not been filled to the brim I'd be complaining about the storage space as well.

I can say It doesn't make me think any less of my ipad. I basically use it for relaxing web-browsing on the couch. I have not run into any memory issues on it. The 3gs is a little different as I am usually on the fly with 6 apps backgrounded, posting here and talking to someone on speaker phone all at the same time!! This news has just about been the icing on the cake for me!! 6.5 days and counting!!

i dont know why everyone complains of the storage. 32g is PLENTY. if you are going to be recording that much ****, connect your phone to itunes and put it onto your computer. then delete it off your phone. was that so hard?

same thing with music, though i use my music with my phone, i dont store a crapload of songs on there. i can understand if people have a lot of apps, but i use to have a lot and deleted most of them b/c i never even use them. its not hard to delete things people lol.

on my 8g 3g i still have like 4gigs left.

Phone's have standards? If you look at the market today pretty much all of them are different. And the only Mobile OS that has a min spec requirement will be Windows mobile 7.

I'm curious if they have changed anything in the charging/docking port that will make any 3g/s chargers/cables obsolete.

Scratch that...seems on Apple.com they have the usb cable and it is compatible with all of them.

I have a harness in my truck and one in my boat.each on was a butt load of money for what it is.I really didn't want apple laying it to me.I had to buy an adapter for my truck cable.

Amazing how fast technology is moving. I'm sure iPhones would have no problem running an operating system like Windows, if ported correctly atleast =P.

People are quick to compare iPad to iPhone/iPod touch, and while they share some tech, different device for different purpose. I have both devices, and can honestly say that I use the iPad for basic browsing and dj setup. I'm happy to hear that there's more ram on the phone, since it's running the phone, mail, and usually the SMS in the background. iPad doesn't really much, unless ur running mail.

So either way, it's all gravy.

Just gonna put you in place.. ONLY REASON a touch or ipad has 64 gb's is because it uses 2 32gb sticks.. thus = 64, cant fit 2 32's in a phone..
the technolgy wasnt out in time.. but now Samsung has there 128's out we will probably see in the next phone..

      so you.. EPIC FAIL!!!

Wow! This is going to make my upgrade from the 3G LEGENDARY. I was slightly disappointed when I thought there was only 256 from the first teardowns, but I'm geeked about this.

Now assuming u are correct......Why would we want an Iphone 4 now. When we could save our money and buy exactly what u stated in lets say a year from now (if that)?

Because some people buy every generation of the iPhone. People can wait if they want but the iPhone 4 made a big improvment over the other iPhones so far.

i just buy every big upgrade, ipod 2g, (added speaker, accelerometer, better screen, volume buttons) and now the ipod 4g.

every 2 years there's a real upgrade, it seems

If you wait till next year to buy the upgraded version you'll never buy anything ever because by then something better will be coming out the year after.

With phones I go with my contract. Every 2 years I go and pick the new hotness, pay little to nothing for it (relatively speaking), and renew for 2 years. I find getting a new phone every year to just be a huge waste but I'm not going to judge the trend-setters who have to be at the top of the hill all year round. If they got the dough to spend on it, more power to them.
