  • Microsoft Officially Releases Skype 5.0 for iPhone and iPod touch in the App Store

Three days ago, Microsoft announced a major upgrade for its Skype application for iPhone and iPod touch dubbed version 5.0, and since then, Microsoft pulled the old Skype application from the App Store awaiting this new release.

The update is now available in the App Store as of Thursday morning and brings major changes to the user interface, as well as performance improvements, better messaging, in-app notifications, and an improved interface for calling.

You can watch the Skype 5.0 teaser video below:

Now that Skype has been re-added to the App Store, you can either install it by searching for it manually, or you can follow this App Store link to download it for free.

It shows up as an available update but if I try to update it it tells me "it's not available anymore"

What happens when you delete your existing Skype application and try downloading from the link provided in the article?

You need to delete your existing installation and install the new Skype 5.0.

The version of Skype that you guys are running was pulled from the App Store, and therefore the App Store doesn't recognize it as an available update.

Ditto. Go to the App Store and install from there.

The new version is terrible. No account information. How do I tell how much credit I have left? Unless in the new version all calls to other cellphone numbers are now free? Restored the old version. Not recommended yet so dont upgrade.

I did explore the app. Tell me the exact menu buttons to press and I will modify my note. Can't find the menu to tell me what $ I have left. Is it in settings? It's definitely not intuitive. Yes the app looks more pretty but not seeing the functional
      Improvements yet.

I was trying to upload a screen shot it's not working...when you open the app you tap the icon where your pic shows and it will take you to the page where you status and other info shows you will see the amount of credit let you tap on the credit to buy more and so on try it

FYI that Skype no longer works on the iPod touch g2. But can be made to work if you install an older version as an IPA file. Looks like latest version has no way to automatically download oldest Skype version, so you have to jailbreak your iPod touch g2.
