  • Attention UK, France, Canada! Apple Confirms Unlocked SIM-Free iPhones

It's been a big day of clarification for Apple. From clearing up rumors about an Apple Store app release with an actual Apple Store application, to setting the record straight on SIM-free iPhones being unlocked, Apple fans are getting plenty of answers today - unless, of course, you want to know exactly when your white iPhone 4 will be ready

Today, Apple is confirming that the SIM-free iPhones sold in Canada, the United Kingdom, and France are, indeed, unlocked. Needless to say, these unlocked devices aren't locked in to any one provider - you know, like we're used to in the US. Available without contract and ready for use with any preferred carrier is a remarkably refreshing concept, isn't it?

    From Apple:

When you purchase your iPhone from the Apple Online Store, you’ll get it commitment-free. So you can sign up for service with the carrier of your choice and change your carrier at any time.
Here's the financial skinny, if you're not already familiar. The SIM free unlocked iPhone 4’s can be purchased for 499 (16GB), and 599 (32GB) in the UK. It'll run you €629 (16GB) or €739 (32GB) in France. And, lastly, expect to cough up $649 (16GB) or $749 (32GB) in Canada. As expected, the iPhone is substantially more expensive without a contract attached. "Carriers typically sell the iPhone with a contract that subsidizes the initial purchase price of the phone," reminds Apple on its FAQ page. "By purchasing your iPhone without a contract, you can use any SIM or micro-SIM card from a compatible carrier, including your current one."

Let's me do the math for you.

Unlimited talk and text for $59.99
Unlimited internet for $10 (s/b $20 but there is a way to get the $10 plan instead of the $20).
Total bill of $69.99 or $79.99 (depending on how you set up the data plan)

      unlimited talk = $69.99
      Unlimited Txt = $20.00
No Unlimited Internet so using the 2GB plan = $25 or $45 with tethering (which I can do with T-mo for no add'l cost and prob can do with AT&T without paying the add'l $)
Total cost per mth for AT&T = $114.99 without taxes or assuming you don't go over the 2GB cap.

Now subtract out the price of the phone. $199 vs. $599.
      ATT cost over 2 years @ 114.99 = $2759.76 + $199 = $2,958.76
      TMO cost over 2 years @ 79.99 = $1919.76 + $599 = $2,518.76
      TMO cost over 2 years @ 69.99 = $1679.76 + $599 = $2,278.76

      Difference @ 79.99 = $40 savings
      Difference @ 69.99 = $280 savings

Remember, no contract with TMO and unlimited data vs. 3G speeds, a 2GB cap, and a 2 yr contract. Either way, you save money and get more data.

That's great, if only 3G worked on TMO though
(see my post a few above this one with details and new rumor)

No one will ever understand how the U.S. works, why the U.S. works how it does, and why its citizens continue to let it work the way it does. =/

Don't even get me started on the drinking age here...

It is a good option especially if you travel. I might get one the unlocked iPhone 4 from Canada.

BTW OFFICIALLY unlocked will stay unlocked. I know someone that has a 3G officially unlocked and it is unlocked even after you updated the FW. I use AT&T anyway so I ll dont mind getting if for 299 but this will be an option if I ll travel more so I don't have to use my Nokia instead

I ordered mine last night through Apple UK. Website says you can order a maximum of two. Have to be picked up in the store or delivered to a valid UK address. I also unlocked my O2 pay as you go 3GS a little while ago, no problems with O2 as carrier, one time cost was 15. Wery nice that this is possible since my home contry is Norway.

Going to visit family in Canada in July (hopefully after the release of Iphone 4). Definitely going to check out the apple store. Plus I'm going to check out some of those Asian malls. I remember they used to get all the unlock Nokias (back in the days) before anyone had them in the states. Just gotta justify spending the $600 for another after spending $300 for the stateside one. Hmmm.

Question...per the apple store website for CN, after putting in the sim, you have to connect to Itunes and choose your carrier. Can you do that more then once, what if you change carriers...connect to Itunes everytime?

I dont think you can just drive to CN and buy one. Do they ask for proof of Canadian residency?

I have Not ever seen price plans in Canada differ whether the providers give you the subsidy for a new phone or if you have not upgraded in years. So why pay full price when you can get a locked one for way less then half? The monthly cost will still be the same.

That is too expensive. I think Apple should automatic unlocked the phone after the contract is up.

I'll be in Vancouver from the 24th to the 28th.

Does anyone know for certain yet if non-Canadian's can buy with Canadian currency (cash) an iPhone 4 unlocked?

Or will it need to be matched with a Canadian address?

It will be a lot of hassle, setting up a PO box (they have those?), buying a prepaid debit card (they have those also?) to "show" residency (or the appearance of it.)

Totally out of the question if they require a Canadian drivers license.

It will be a shame if I'm force to pay $100 to $200 premium to some Ebay guy just to buy an unlocked one from Canada and have it shipped to USA.

So do u have to pre order in canada or can u drive up and pay cash and pick it up in person on release day??

I'm quite confused about the whole pre ordering idea because I have never pre ordered anything in my life. Okay so say I would like to buy an iPhone 4 without contract at my closest apple store on the pre ordered date specified for Canada if it ever comes out. How does the pre ordering process work? do you pay a deposit and then come back during launch day? please explain and thanks

I'm in Vancouver, Canada if it helps at all.

If they are providing unlocked iphones which can have any carrier local sim too. I think they need to unlock all iphones released so far. Will they do so?

I wish if they could unlock all iphones to make it compatible for any local sim.
