  • Attention UK, France, Canada! Apple Confirms Unlocked SIM-Free iPhones

It's been a big day of clarification for Apple. From clearing up rumors about an Apple Store app release with an actual Apple Store application, to setting the record straight on SIM-free iPhones being unlocked, Apple fans are getting plenty of answers today - unless, of course, you want to know exactly when your white iPhone 4 will be ready

Today, Apple is confirming that the SIM-free iPhones sold in Canada, the United Kingdom, and France are, indeed, unlocked. Needless to say, these unlocked devices aren't locked in to any one provider - you know, like we're used to in the US. Available without contract and ready for use with any preferred carrier is a remarkably refreshing concept, isn't it?

    From Apple:

When you purchase your iPhone from the Apple Online Store, you’ll get it commitment-free. So you can sign up for service with the carrier of your choice and change your carrier at any time.
Here's the financial skinny, if you're not already familiar. The SIM free unlocked iPhone 4’s can be purchased for £499 (16GB), and £599 (32GB) in the UK. It'll run you €629 (16GB) or €739 (32GB) in France. And, lastly, expect to cough up $649 (16GB) or $749 (32GB) in Canada. As expected, the iPhone is substantially more expensive without a contract attached. "Carriers typically sell the iPhone with a contract that subsidizes the initial purchase price of the phone," reminds Apple on its FAQ page. "By purchasing your iPhone without a contract, you can use any SIM or micro-SIM card from a compatible carrier, including your current one."

So i live in seattle as well.. I realy would love to know if this will work on tmobile and the "modem firware" will be no big deal?? What happens when you update to 4.0.1 or 4.0.2 ect. Im all over going up north for a pair of phones for my wife and I but I want to know for sure that these issues wont be issues!

      Hi Guys

Well I live in the UK and purchased my 3GS unlocked which I think came from Italy last year.

Going to wait and see what the new phone physically looks like and whether the new features are worth it for me and if so will get an unlocked one from Apple. I do a fair bit of international travel and being able to pop in a local sim is a serious cash saver.

It takes micro sim though. Does TMO even have these?

exactly what i was gonna ask. I've already looked at several tutorials on how to cut my current tmobile sim but i'd prefer to use an actual microsim anyday

Officially unlocked means no matter what firmware or baseband you have it will work with any GSM carrier. You won't have to wait for the new unlocks to come out and don't have to worry about accidentally updating to the latest firmware and losing your unlock.

Of course there is going to be a limit, up to a max of 10 iphones in a lifetime for each person from Apple Store.

Now, it gets me interested in upgrading to iphone 4 which I think I am eligible to upgrade after doing only 1 year out of the 3 yrs contract.

The pre orders at Apple UK have "ran out"? WTF!!!
Shipping date for new pre orders is by July 2nd. Great I'm going to have to wait again like last year, I knew I shouldn't have waited another day!!
It's all down to O2 now to let people pre order.

That is how Apple will lock you out, Iphone 4 uses micro sim , even if you have the official unlock , you still can't use it on T-mobile as T-mobile uses regular sim.

I can't believe you guys would pay upwards of 800 bucks for a cell phone lol. That is insane! We all know the phone is not worth more then a few hundred bucks to begin with. Make Apple more richer would ya?

You DO realize that the subsidy that is paid to Apple when you sign a contract makes up the difference right? In other words your words have no merit as Apple is making the same amount of money either way... And by the way, it is cirtually the same for every smart phone on the market.

Oh yay! Too bad Apple doesn't let that option go fly in the US.

It's paid but it's not paid by me lol. My words have perfect merit! If AT&T wants to pay over-bloated prices by my guest...I'm paying for my plan and that's it.

"Quadband GSM, Steve Jobs said, and you could hear the hiss of excitement as eager T-Mobile USA customers suddenly wondered if they’d be able to take advantage of the iPhone 4. Unfortunately, a quick glance at the freshly posted spec sheet confirms their hopes are in vain: the iPhone 4 supports 850, 900, 1900 and 2100 MHz UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA, not the 1700/2100 T-Mobile USA requires."

Is 1700/2100 not a GSM standard? I don't get it so I checked Wikipedia:
T-Mobile USA - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(see weird history and why they did what they did with their 3G)

Another rumor is T-Mobile U.S. will get the iPhone 4 in several months.
Apple Could Add T-Mobile as iPhone Carrier, Says Analyst - Mobile and Wireless from eWeek
iPhone 4 Could Be Headed for T-Mobile Before Verizon
I'm not how it would work though reading the above! ??
