  • Best Buy, RadioShack iPhone 4 Preorders Start Tomorrow

[UPDATE: Confirmed. Still no official word on pricing, though.]

[OK, UPDATE 2: Best Buy Mobile rep told me AT&T is letting all retail outlets (so that includes Wal-mart and RadioShack too) offer upgrade pricing. You have to make pre-orders in person at Best Buy locations, though: no online or phone-in options.]

Despite official silence about availability and pricing, a Best Buy representative told me that iPhone 4 pre-ordering will begin tomorrow for in-store pickup only on June 24. The new phone will also be sold at retail to walk-in (or wait-in-line) customers, but availability was said to be subject to pre-orders, suggesting that it's not first-come-first-served: customers who placed orders ahead of time would get their phones first. The rep was unable to answer my question about upgrade pricing.

For launch day, I have a choice of an AT&T Store in a heinous shopping center, or a Best Buy attached to a fashionable mall near MIT with a Starbucks and WiFi. If I'm going to have to wait in line (cause I want to bring you guys my report as soon as possible), I'd definitely prefer to be comfortable, indoors and caffeinated. But the deal-breaker, obviously, would be if for some reason I couldn't get my upgrade discount at Best Buy. There's every indication that I will be able to - Best Buy gave upgrade pricing on iPhone 3GS last year - but so far the company is remaining mum.

In addition to AT&T, Apple and Best Buy retail outlets, iPhone 4 will also be available at RadioShack and Wal-mart stores on launch day. RadioShack announced via their Twitter feed that they will also be accepting pre-orders.

I think if you order from Apple for shipment to your home you will receive it on the 24th.

If I'm upgrading, for the $199 or $299 price. What are my pre-order options? Only AT&T, in the store?

is it safe to say that pre-ordering begins at 12:01am tonight?

I dial *639# and I get As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee.

Does that mean the $199/$299 pricing?

You people realize that you can pre-order online and get free delivery on launch date... right?

Pre-ordering will not start at 12:01am. With that logic, why not 12:00am? Pre-orders will start around 9am est, just like every iphone online pre-order.

      spiderguy, yes.

What do you mean by "You people"?! lol. Sounds like im pre-ordering through best buy. I can't get a straight answer from anyone at AT&T about how their whole pre-ordering/pick up is going to work.

Pre-ordering at a site has some advantages. If you do not have wifi at home, having a CSR activate for you is a great benefit. Also, I realize this means you would be very impatient, but some people don't want to wait until 4PM to get their new toy, and would love to pick it up at 10AM.

Best-Buy would be 100% guaranteed that you'd get your phone on time.

If you preorder at BestBuy they will charge you $50 deposit that can go toward the purchase of the iPhone, and you pay the rest when you get the iPhone.

"zerocoolak: If you pre-order through AT&T, you won't be able to pick it up until Friday the 25th. They may make an exception, but there website says otherwise. Just a heads up. AT&T is all about the fine line print."

This is what I was told as well. Pre orders to house/store won't arrive until the 25th. This is to make sure iTunes activation doesn't crash (again).

I don't see why Best Buy not giving upgrade pricing is even a consideration here. There is zero reason to worry. They are an authorized ATT/Apple reseller. As long as your ATT account shows that you are eligible for upgrade pricing you WILL get upgrade pricing...

Anyone here receiving a 15% employer discount for AT&T? I was told that it's a lot easier to pre-order directly through them (I will be a new customer moving from T-mobile) since they can apply the discount immediately. If I went to RadioShack/BestBuy/Apple, it would take 2-3 billing cycles

I may do that as well. I've considered taking the day off of work and just waiting for the Fedex guy to drop it off and also considered waiting in line in the early AM again. Having it shipped to work then taking a half-day when it arrives might be a better idea.

If by 4PM you mean when parcels are delivered to your house, other people get them first thing in the morning. It's infinitely more convenient for me to just pre-order online and be the one that unboxes my new iphone, not some squirrel in-store customer service person.

Bestbuy realizes that people that shop at their store already aren't very smart shoppers - paying full retail, when they can get the same for less online... so why wouldn't they consider charging more?

Release date is the 24th. If you pre-order online, you'll get it delivered the 24th. They're making up the 25th date in order to justify waiting in a line to pick it up in-store.

Last year I bought a 3GS with the Early upgrade pricing (not the full discount)When I do *639# I get
"you may select equipment at our full price" So I called up at&T and they told me to call an official at&t store (there systems currently do not have iPhone eligibly info). The guy at the store looked up my account. He said you account shows that you can not get any discount. but said that every current AT&T iPhone customer will get the full or partial discount. He said they they would have to override mine in the in the system when I come pre order. I told him I wanted to go to Rat Shack since they have the trade in program. He said hes not sure if it would work there since an AT&T manger needs to type in a code to override, but told me to call the radio shack that I was going to buy it from to see if they could do it. I called them and they said they have the same systems as at&t but can only authorize what it tells them. They do not know they every current AT&T iPhone customer gets a discount, but said to come on down and they might be able to call at&t up and do it.
So as usual getting the new phone will be a pain in the a**
