  • iPhone 4.0 Multitasking on iPhone 3G/iPod touch 2G

The welcome announcement of multitasking support in iPhone 4.0 was muted by Steve Jobs throwing millions of iPod and iPhone users under the bus. "Their hardware can’t support it," Jobs said, adding "if that’s an incentive for them to upgrade to a new device… terrific..” Well thanks, Steve. Imposing high minimum system requirements for OS upgrades are nothing new, but saying that "hardware can't support" what it can clearly (if slowly) support seems a little... well "disingenuous" is a kind word for it.

Turns out that older iPhones and iPod touch devices can, of course, support iPhone OS 4.0 multitasking. The switch to enable or disable multitasking was found last week by Will Strafach (@cdevwill), the guy who tweeted the picture of the iPad running Cydia. Apparently one of the properties in the capabilities plist of springboard.app (/System/Library/CoreService/SpringBoard.app/N82AP.plist) is MULTITASKING=FALSE. Change that to TRUE, according to Will, and you're all set.

Sure, it'll probably crawl. But why not let users decide whether or not they want to enable it? Although if Apple wants to continue to encourage jailbreaking by locking down the features of the OS, that's fine with us...

Yes but even in Android 1 you get basic stuff like multitasking, file browsing, folders, bluetooth OBEX, etc. I even had this stuff on my old SE W950i. Now Apple's acting like they achieved the impossible breakthrough: you can put the apps in a folder now ..WOW!

I'm pretty sure that if you enable it on a 3g, it will stop quitting apps when you exit them and you'll have to frequently manually kill apps just to keep the device running even in a mediocre manner. Apps that play music are the only ones I can see having any dire need for this at all.

And also, if you're going to jailbreak to access the root system, which you need to do to enable the 4.0 native multitasking, you may as well just get a multitasking app from Cydia instead that allows you to choose which apps to enable multitasking on so you don't run into this little snag.

you will notice a big decrees in battery if you over clock a 2g or 3g iphone's processor.

Lol How stupid ARE Apple? We'll stop this feature being enabled by changed a setting to False instead of True. Next thing you know the first gen iPhone will run 4.0 just by changing a couple of strings from iPhone_3GS to iPhone 1.1 lol

Is there a way to enable it before the restore/update in the firmware files? I have them but i cnt find anything..... im on a mac and there is something called 018-7685-006.dmg in the firmware files and it is password protected. Could this be where the system files are? If so what is the password?
