  • iPhone 4.0 Multitasking on iPhone 3G/iPod touch 2G

The welcome announcement of multitasking support in iPhone 4.0 was muted by Steve Jobs throwing millions of iPod and iPhone users under the bus. "Their hardware can’t support it," Jobs said, adding "if that’s an incentive for them to upgrade to a new device… terrific..” Well thanks, Steve. Imposing high minimum system requirements for OS upgrades are nothing new, but saying that "hardware can't support" what it can clearly (if slowly) support seems a little... well "disingenuous" is a kind word for it.

Turns out that older iPhones and iPod touch devices can, of course, support iPhone OS 4.0 multitasking. The switch to enable or disable multitasking was found last week by Will Strafach (@cdevwill), the guy who tweeted the picture of the iPad running Cydia. Apparently one of the properties in the capabilities plist of springboard.app (/System/Library/CoreService/SpringBoard.app/N82AP.plist) is MULTITASKING=FALSE. Change that to TRUE, according to Will, and you're all set.

Sure, it'll probably crawl. But why not let users decide whether or not they want to enable it? Although if Apple wants to continue to encourage jailbreaking by locking down the features of the OS, that's fine with us...

Can't wait for the summer. iPhone OS 4.0 sound like a winner. Plus jailbreak is already in play.

actually, this kinda has already existed with Bite sms, or one of those sms apps out there. In the middle of a phone call or while I am playing with my gba emulator, I can receive and reply to text messages in a little pop up box which is really neat while everything else runs nice and smoothly at the same time

i can't speak for that app, but with even the most basic apps running with Backgrounder, the phone slows to a painful crawl.

i hope it works so I can jailbreak my 3G and sell it for more money by saying it supports multitasking. But this is sommething I'd be leery of getting "excited" about as a 3G owner. people say, "why not give consumers the choice", I'd suggest because in cases like this, people will choose to try to use it, then get mad at Apple because their phone is slow or battery life is destroyed. or because the lack of memory is suddenly causing apps to quit unexpectedly. hundreds of internet posts blaming Apple for making a shoddy OS and generating unnecessary negative publicity.

all for people to have a choice in the matter.

I use proswitcher on my ipd2 and ran 9 apps with not that much lag. even if this does cause lag couldn't someone make a cydia app to replicate the multitasking because I prefere to 4.0 multitasking then proswitcher

I think they just don't want it for the weaker devices because they don't want you to open a bunch of stuff at the same time and run the risk of a springboard crash.
That's whats so great about multi-tasking, not having to worry about what's open and what's not. I'm not saying it's a bad thing to have on the 2G/3G phones, it just wasn't meant for them and I think people will find out why. We won't find out how the phone actually runs the full 4.0 OS til summer anyway, maybe there's something that makes the phone run a bit slower. Either way...4G iPhone is going to rock, can't wait to get one

What is different in iPhone 3G's hardware and 2G's hardware. As far as I know the processor and RAM are the same. Why wouldn't the 2G be supported? Next thing I know OSX 10.7 won't run on my 2007 MBP because there will be 2-3 newer models...

Damn Apple dictators. Android has a lot of catching up to do but my next phone won't be an Apple...nor will my laptop...

Haha...there is a diff...specialy the colck speed i higher on the 3Gs..thats why is "s" for speed.. Nowwww.
What we all can think is that the 3 iphones now are the same processor but in some cases some other hardware on the motherboard are different...
Haha..this is kinda stupid i know..but perhaps for some of..if some one could overclock the Cpu at 600Mhz or just like the 3Gs...that could solve some problems for 3G users and eventually bring other problems also..haha.
Just try it...any script for those of 3G users to overclock ?

you can't even get android 2.1 for older android phones (which are, btw, a year old). apple was kind to give updates to their old iphones for three years.

I meant the difference between 3G and 2G, not 3Gs. As far as I know the it's basically the same phone with added 3G internet and GPS.
