What's with all these assumptions about iTunes and what it may/may not be doing? The article was about known hackers being banned. (ie the people who publish cracked software etc) Not end users.

Then again, why crack down on these guys shortly before ipad is released, and before the 4G? Maybe there's something there..

because of pirates. I also pirated apps, but i try to buy them when i can. I'm only getting 8hours a week of minimum wage, so thats why i say when i can. In fact apple might be looking out for the more small fry developers that are just trying make some money from their hard work.

I buy apps from the appstore, so if they took this hard stance, I would definately reconsider my options when my contract runs out... they're shooting themselves in the foot really...

It's called the iTunes App Store and, even if you didn't know that, you do know that it requires an iTunes account to use it. Now do you see how it hurts them? No account = no purchases from the App Store. Durr...

No one was ever taking about the PC/Mac program, which can be used without an account. We were always talking about the iTunes account as it applies to the App Store and iTunes Store accessed on the iPhone.

I'm sorry but once you buy your phone/iPod, you should be able to do whatever you want with it. Once you buy it it belongs to you and you alone. We're not renting it from Apple -- we don't have to give it back. It's mine. It's ours.

If Apple can exert supreme power over its devices even after the purchase, then there has been a breakdown of government regulations.

I really don't think Apple has the right to ban anyone from buying their products. I think they did it just to send a message to us all. It's that old military strategy (that Hitler perfected) of killing off the officers in the army to send a message to everyone else.

It may not be legal, but Apple's got so much money they can afford to pay the legal fees -- it's worth it considering how much free press they're getting out of it.

I've never been one to condone piracy, but Apple is coming real close to making me want to.

I mean, before it was just a good fight, but now it's getting personal -- some kind of line is being crossed here. I don't think it's totally crossed yet, but Apple is certainly testing the waters to see what it can get away with... and that usually brings more trouble.

Man, this post is messed up, but I only see the cheating reference in your post so I assume it's your comment. Anyway, modded XBOX consoles could cheat only on the original XBOX console and Live service. That's when they started banning for that reason. The vast majority of the time the XBOX 360 has existed, the mods have been for piracy/backup ONLY (no unofficial/hacked software was possible). This means that MS has been banning for reasons unrelated to cheating all along. The homebrew/unofficial code methods we now have on the 360 have nothing to do with the drive firmware mods which they detect and ban. they require old consoles with old firmware to set up, which can't connect to Live anyway.

1. What projects were these two guys working on?
2. What websites did they host?
3. Where they "PIRATES", "HACKERS", or both?
4. Where they publicly speaking out about jailbreaking?

I find it hard to believe that they were just "HACKERS". If that was the case then Jay Freeman would have gone down in a blaze of glory a long time ago, along with "the dev team" and GeoHot.

Thanks to Apple, I have ordered my first Android phone. Goodbye 3G and 3GS, hello Nexus One. I will probably keep them as spares, or just use them as ipods.

It just doesn't make sense to me that a company can impose restrictions on hardware that I paid the full price for.

I was with windows mobile devices tilt, fuze and tilt2 for years did alot of mods and graphics. Went to the iphone and never looked back but if I cant make the iphone look and act the way I want it then I might consider giving windows mobile 7 a try anyways. But I dont think I would ever let the iphone go completely.

I have decided that when my contract ends later this year from tmobile then I will give att a chance and probably get the newest iphone model. I will then see after 2 years how my experience is with att. Unlocking/Jailbreaking i don't know anymore.

This is just a scare tactic apple is using to try to discourage jailbreaking.
If it happens just create a new account and use a different payment card. I am sure you could just use the paypal virtual card feature and just recreate a new card each time you get banned.
Don't let this new account ban scare any newcomers to jailbreaking.

Why ban hackers? That's how Apple got their ideas for iPhone. Lol. Not sure if they will do this to all jailbroken devices or what but if they ban my account for a "security issue" or whatever, I'm switching to Android lol. I'm starting to get pretty pissed with Apple and their crap. 4.0 better be good. Also, if 4.0 doesn't at least have multi tasking, I'm switching to android. I really don't want to, but I dunno.

Perhaps this is all a consequence of someone playing silly buggers with their accounts or a consequence of the hacking they do - with the system picking up on it in an automated fashion rather than being targeted.

I seriously doubt it will happen, but if they do find a way to crackdown completely on Jailbreaking, I'll be switching to an android based phone.

The possible loss of revenue through potential piracy by jailbreaking?

I would disagree, I know many people with JB'd iphones, all done for customisation, and not for installing pirated software.. appstore apps are cheap enough... I would imagine this is why the vast amount of people JB their device, for open source apps etc.. not to install a priated appsrtore app that costs a couple of quid...
