  • iOS Hacker Winocm Demonstrates Untethered Jailbreak on iOS 7.1.1 on iPhone 4

On Saturday, well-known iOS hacker Winocm demonstrated an untethered jailbreak on a GSM iPhone 4 running iOS 7.1.1. Winocm is also responsible for the recent video demonstrating a triple boot of iOS 5.1, 6.1.3, and 7.0.6 on an iPad 2 just a couple of months ago, and was also behind some of the work in the p0sixpwn jailbreak for iOS 6.1.3-6.1.5.

The iOS 7.1.1 untethered jailbreak demonstration video shows us the iPhone 4 booting up untethered. The hacker then shows us that the device is most certainly running iOS 7.1.1, and then proceeds to open Cydia to show the third-party application store running on the device.

Winocm does note that the iOS 7.1.1 untethered jailbreak demonstrated in the video is a result of "the culmination of boredom, 3 hours of work, and lots of masochism." The hacker also notes that the jailbreak could, in fact, run on other devices as well if an effort was put into it, but the hacker doesn't have the will to do so on her own devices.

You can watch the video demonstration of the untethered jailbreak on an iPhone 4 running iOS 7.1.1 below:

Seeing as how Winocm doesn't intend to play with the jailbreak on other kinds of iOS devices, it can also be assumed that the hacker won't be releasing any public form of this jailbreak. On the other hand, it's nice to see a proof of concept. Many jailbreakers have accidentally updated to iOS 7.1/7.1.1, or purchased new devices already running the new firmware. The popular evasi0n7 iOS 7.0-7.0.6 jailbreak was patched with the release of iOS 7.1.

In February, Winocm announced that she is expected to begin working at Apple later this year.

What I wouldn't give to be able to jailbreak the same day the 6 is released.

Last time I checked Winocm was a " she" not a "he".

Hopefully not until iOS 8. There's no need to reveal exploits at this time. 7.0.6 is good enough. Blame evasi0n for being released right before iOS 7.1. If they'd waited just a few weeks, you'd probably have your JB. They jumped the gun though.

Eh, not really "a few weeks."

With evasi0n7 being released mid-December of last year, and iOS 7.1 not even dropping until mid-March, that's a pretty stark 3 month difference.

I'm sure the evad3rs had their reasons.

Damn, I want a jb to be released soon, since I have an ipad mini with retina and cracked screen and stuck with 7.0.2. So I can send it to apple and fix my screen

Didn't they release evasion because the exploits were patched in the 7.1 betas? If I'm not mistaken, they didn't jump the gun.

Is is that easy that some reddit user just jailbroke their phone? :/
