  • Who Owns Thunderbolt?

The wonder-kid I/O born of illegitimate relations between Apple and Intel might be in for a custody battle soon.

Taking a gander at Intel's trademarks page, the 10Gbps Thunderbolt I/O is clearly listed. However, looking for a trademark filing in both Canada and the United States turns up empty on Intel's behalf. Instead, Apple turns up as the owner of the Thunderbolt trademark.

This emerged after rumors of Sony implementing Thunderbolt in upcoming machines, but in a Type-A USB jack as opposed to a mini DisplayPort connector. Even more puzzling is the fact Thunderbolt appears as a registered trademark to Intel on packaging of the early 2011 Macbook Pros.

The advantages of Thunderbolt are undeniable, and to see the high-speed I/O experience any sort of brand confusion or fragmenting could hurt its implementation. There is a reason USB is called a Universal Serial Bus, it is UNIVERSAL. Fragmenting a new I/O could doom it from the beginning.

Then again, perhaps this is just a rebranding by Apple, much in the same way IEEE 1394 was branded as FireWire by Apple and then granted as a free license. Hopefully none of this trademark confusion and fragmentation is sign of real problems, because it would sure be nice to be able to transfer an entire Blu-Ray to my external storage in 30 seconds and not 30 minutes.

New rumor buzzing around: Apple has claimed that they have put a patent on water. Anyone else claiming to own water is getting sued into poverty.

I think that they need to use a universal thunderbolt port not this display connector And USB form factor crap and it needs to be available for all new computers, the more systems with it then the more drives and stuff that use thunderbolt

It's funny that you mention FireWire. At the time FireWire was a superior tech, but never really migrated from macs to the PC world and I think that it is apple's marketing dept to blame. By "rebranding technology" it makes it sound proprietary (even if you give the licensing away). As soon as I heard that Apple was "rebranding" this as Thunderbolt, I got nervous. I would hate to see this tech be doomed to the fate of FireWire and perhaps FaceTime (fate remains to be seen as to whether it makes the jump from being an apple-only product to a more widely-used, dare I say "standard" for video calling) all because apple thought "thunderbolt" sounded cooler :/

I'm glad you read this article just to post that brilliant comment. Alot of people own new macs with thunderbolt and alot of people want to add it to preexisting towers. This article is interesting to the people who use their brain for reasons other than getting on mmi to troll the new articles.

It's not in the interest of apple to be the only one with thunderbolt, more devices = more accessories and thunderbolt stuff, i think they just want to be called the makers of thunderbolt or something

      EDIT: P.S. i do own a MBP early 2011 15" 2.2GHz so i do care

The guy does pay attention to tech inventions. he just does not see the usefulness of such invention yet. he's also fed up with semi useful inventions that are not useful for everyone but packages themselves as if they're gonna change everyone's lives. Tbh, you don't have any rights to tell someone to shut up in this forum. Think about how ignorant you were and all the stupid things you said last year. People that tell others to shut up should be banned. I would ban you if I had the power.

Serious? You should take your own advice...

Thunderbolt should be implemented into products just like USB, this way everyone is on the same page.

I can see it now, a bright sparkly future where USB2.0 and FireWire are relics of the past, replaced with Thunderbolt... Can't wait!

I'm used to calling it lightpeak, that's what it was codenamed lol!
