  • Apple Claims to be Aware of Email Attachment Encryption Issue in iOS 7.1.1

Recent releases of Apple’s iOS platform including the latest iOS 7.1.1 update include a bug that prevents email attachments saved on the device from being protected with encryption, with a fix presumably on the way. Security researcher Andreas Kurtz previously revealed that he has reported the flaw to Apple and the company claimed they were aware of the issue. To date, the problem hasn’t been fixed and Apple hasn’t offered a timetable for when it might be addressed.

The Cupertino California company’s statement on the issue simply mentioned the following:

Using an iPhone 4, Kurtz was able to verify that the attachments could be read without any encryption or restriction after accessing the device’s file system in both iOS 7.1 and iOS 7.1.1, the same vulnerability was then discovered on an iPhone 5S as well as an iPad 2 running iOS 7.0.4. Apple advertises data protection on its iOS platform for devices that offer hardware encryption, which includes the iPhone 3GS and later, as well as all iPad models. Data encryption can be enabled by turning on a passcode lock on an iOS device.

One thing to note is that the security flaw requires that a malicious hacker have physical access to the iPhone in order to read the root file system. Attaching the unencrypted attachments requires the device to be placed in “DFU” mode and accessed via SSH. This step requires that a malicious user would either need the device passcode or perform a hardware jailbreak of the device to exploit the bug.

Apple’s iOS 7.1.1 is currently only available for jailbreak on the iPhone 4. According to the International Business Times:

We’ll have to wait and see when Apple responds to the issue.

I've seen other "BUGS" with IOS 7.1.1... I am have been getting ERROR-Email couldn't be sent, although is being sent at some point but not alway's. Also in Message's if I access Message though phone app>contact's>message's after choosing a contact and message is being typed end's up closing the app, this doesn't happen a lot but I have noticed at least 7-9 times on my iphone 4.I've dfu restored and also with itune's restore and the problem still present. I think I'll try and jailbreak see if it happens with my other Message's..If your still at 7.1 or 7.0.4 I would stay there. I have noticed that ios 6.1.2 works as good or better in performance as ios 7.1...

I would say better. iOS 6 was more fluid. When u go back to the home screen and try to swipe over on ios7. U have to wait a sec.

It says that iOS 7.1.1 is available to JB on iPhone 4? What jailbreak program would I do that with cause I'm on iOS 6.1.2 right now and it seems all the cool apps require iOS 7

Geeksn0w! Look up for the link in the first reply.

Do some research first, a lot of tweaks can't be loaded on iOS 7.1.x
