  • White iPhone? I'll Take Clear Thank You!

Apple's announcement of the white iPhone 4's release tomorrow may not be an earth-shattering revelation as much as it is a relief to some. However, ifixit has an interesting mod for the hardware-tinkering inclined: the clear iPhone 4 back.

Ifixit rates the mod as an easy install. I would beg to differ. Anytime I've had to take apart my mackbook, or iPhone, I end up losing one of the impossibly small screws (torx, proprietary, or philips head) into the endless abyss known as the floor. I suspect my cat has a stash of dropped pencils, screws and other small accoutrement hidden somewhere.

The mod itself will cost you $29.95 and your patience. It comes with the new clear rear panel, camera lens and flash diffuser, all for the GSM/ATT iPhone 4. A small price to pay if you ask me. There's just something about being able to see the guts of my phone that shouts "Yea, I'm dumb enough to risk breaking my $600 phone for a few looks."

    Which I am.

A few ModMyi users have already installed variations of the mod, here and wolk72 did it on his lonesome.

    *update*

This old hat, but for those of you with deep pockets and a penchent for panache ColorWare has some dizzying capabilities when it comes to altering your iPhone, or laptop, or headphones, or baby.

People will buy and put cases or covers on their iPhones regardless of what color Apple sells them in. Why should they bother with something that will cost them more to produce? Most people seem to cover their phone with a case anyways so why does it matter what color it is?

that place has awesome back cover replacements! and for way cheaper than these. i have been rocking the brushed metal or the leather back for a month or so now. it is SOOO much nicer in the hand. if you want clear class they have those too.

is the quality good? fast shipping?

Seriously, a retard could replace the back of an iPhone 4

2 screws and it slips off. When putting new one on just use the plastic flash/camera guard on the new back.

shipping is not fast but the quality is very good. took about 2 weeks to get mine. i've seen about 6 of the various covers they offer now and all were very good quality (after i set up mine a handful of co-workers jumped on the bus).

those where my sentiments when I decided to order a full white kit a few weeks ago. Not like back in the days of my nextel phones when all the cool LEDs and inner workings gave the clear case the extra flair that made it the cool thing to do.

the coolest thing would be on the back if you could see the vibrator as it goes, but if i remember correctly its under another cover.

The install isn't that bad at all. if you have the patience you can get it done in about 45-60 minutes.

for the rear its a cakewalk, literally 2 screws and your are done.

this is what I use, 1 or 2 dollars at most hardware stores...Metal bowl with magnetic base. Problem solved.

You can't be serial. It's TWO SCREWS. The case slides up and off, then down and back on reinsert the two screws. This is the ONLY iphone ever built that requires no alteration of the actual phone parts in any way to remove the backing. It's *JUST* the back on two screws. It has literally never been easier, nor more safe to take a peek inside.

2 screws, no cables, no cords, no actual phone intrusion at all. On the 2g you have to nearly tear the case off with a crowbar and the cables must be unplugged risking tearing them. On the 3g and 3gs the entire motherboard and ALL guts must come out to change the case. On the i4? ............ two screws, no components or cable in any way. *WINNING*

Got mine in a few weeks ago. Two screws, and my kit came with both the phillips and torx screwdrivers. I like it because it's so different and felt the chrome went well with the silver parts inside and the overall look.

Two screws, made sure I had a microfiber cloth with me so I didn't have dust inside when I was done.

I love the employees' (and other customers) reactions when they see it at AT&T or Apple stores. Just came in to the AT&T store to get my OtterBox replaced under warranty and they offer to put the new case on for you, microfiber in hand. Employee was like, "WTF?! Hey guys, come check this out!" They aren't used to seeing anything other than stock, non-jailbroken phones.

EDIT: Mine came with camera ring and all installed and ready to drop in. Pictures look exactly the same as before with and without flash on.

Well, for some people, it may depend on how new their phone is. A lot of your average folks aren't going to have the driver for those new Pentalobe screws.

You don't need a pentalobe driver. A double edge razor such as one that goes in a box cutter actually unscrews the screw perfectly. FYI to those spending $10 and waiting two weeks. The screws simply aren't in there that tight so the razor grabs each side of the inside of the screw and runs it right out.
