  • OWC Now Offering 480 GB SSD For Late 2010 MacBook Air Models

Other World Computing has just released the 480GB Mercury Aura Pro Express Solid State Drive for MacBook Air. If you’ve already outgrown the SSD that came with your MacBook Air, then this may be just the thing for you. It’s also quite a bit faster than the SSD’s that Apple now ships with current MacBook Air models.

With transfer speeds of up to 275 MB/s, they’re 68% faster than the SSD’s from Apple. These drives are also available in 180 GB, 240 GB and 360 GB versions as well. They don’t come cheap, however, as the 180 GB drive will set you back $480 and the 480 GB drive costs a whopping $1,579.99. That’s about the same price as a well-equipped 13.3-inch MacBook Air model, but if you’ve got the cash and require a speedy SSD, then OWC has you covered.

Mercury Aura Pro Express SSD’s are compatible with both the 11.6-inch MacBook Air model and the 13.3-inch version as well. Currently, these systems ship with either 64 GB, 128 GB or 256 GB SSD’s. That may be fine for most of us, but it’s nice to know that upgrades are available if you need something larger and faster than stock SSD’s.

The company also states, “OWC SSD with Durawrite™ Technology, optimizes writes to the flash memory over conventional controllers increasing the overall endurance and reliability of the complete SSD. Highly intelligent block management and wear leveling also extends the overall endurance.” These drives also feature Chip Based Data Encryption that is 128-bit AES-compliant and include TRIM support as well. They also come with a three-year warranty. Not bad if you can afford it.
