  • iMac Refresh Imminent

9 to 5 Mac is reporting Apple has started notifying customers that their recent iMac purchases would not be shipped till next week. This seems to confirm CNET’s Brian Tong ‘s report new iMacs would be due out by the end of April or the first week in May.

Prospective iMac owners have eagerly anticipated the update after the Macbook Pro refresh saw the implementation of Intel’s Sandy Bridge processors and the Thunderbolt I/O technology. The iMac refresh is expected to include processor and I/O bumps the Macbook’s had as well as an increase in the base hard drive size to 1TB expandable to 3TB. The rumored change in screen sizes and case design appear have been just that, rumor.

Also, loose-lipped Apple employees have splashed message boards at MacRumors.com and 9 to 5 Mac with rumors of a $100 price drop on current iMac models starting this Friday in store. All things considered that’s hardly incentive to purchase a Sandy Bridge and Thunderbolt-less iMac.

What would you, the ModMyi community, like to see in the new iMacs?

Quite frankly, I don't need a Sandy Bridge processor or Thunderbolt. I don't do processor-intensive tasks , so my i7 works just fine (it's good to know I have the extra horsepower if I need it), and Thunderbolt is poorly implemented right now (I have never seen a Thunderbolt powered device anywhere yet).

I do want to see a new case design and maybe some expandability options, like the Mac Pros have. But both things look like will not happen in quite a while.

I bought top of the line iMac and it's incredible! I made it a server and has about 3 different OS's using virtual box--ranging from Solaris to Windows 2008 x64. I love this machine! I even have final cut on this thing! I don't know about everyone but I really don't need a new machine. Works the way I like it!

A multi-touch screen would be awesome, but they already discarded that idea because of the "unnatural" position your hands need to be in to operate a multi-touch screen at a 70-90 degree angle and while having your arm hanging in the air. They talked about this on their Macbook Air (2010) keynote.

A Blu-Ray player would be tricky, because of Apple's "MINE!!" theory. They want to use technology they either invented, or helped develop in some way, most of the time.

And things are looking like newer incarnations of OS X will be a big version of iOS, don't know if they'd make it self-aware though......maybe by "Mac iOS XVIII" or something.

I'd like to see the 1Tb HDD as well as a quad core processor and a killer graphics card so I can dump my gaming pc once and for all.

I'm a lifetime winblows user and are thinking of making the switch to Mac with the upcoming offering. I do however rely on Windows Media Center to feed my xbox360's Tv content. WMC is by far the best PVR solution available and with the 360 integration, I cannot forgoe it.

This seems to be the place where highly knowledgable people hang out. SO my Q is - can I run WMC in a virtual instance and accessing my USB tuners without issue?? Or is DMA access to such devices a no go?

As far as Xbox 360 integration goes, this is what I found. I honestly haven't seen it or used it because I don't own an 360, but you could try it out.

As you may know, you can install Winblows on your Mac as a secondary OS (dual-boot) and use it only when you need to stream media to your 360.

I'll keep an eye out to see if there are other solutions; but you can't go wrong with a Mac. I used Winblows for over 15 years, until last September when I got my iMac and I don't regret the switch: this has been my favorite computer of all time! (out of more than 10 I've had)
