  • Apple Reportedly Planning to Use Sharp's Futuristic p-Si LCDs for iPhone 6

Once again we find ourselves discussing the iPhone 6 before we've even enjoyed our first look at the iPhone 5. But reports surfacing Monday suggest that Apple is already laying the foundation for its sixth generation iPhone, at least in terms of the device's LCD display.

Here's what we know - or think we know based on the latest reports: Apple is planning to work with Sharp to produce futuristic, next-generation low-temperature poly-silicon LCD displays. The benefit of the LCD displays will be a lighter-weight and thinner design for the iPhone.

This speculation comes out of the far east, specifically in a new report from Japanese newspaper Nikkan. According to sources speaking with the publication, Apple and Sharp have agreed to begin building the LCD displays next spring - spring of 2012 - likely to put the iPhone 6 on track for a summer 2012 debut.

In other words, it looks like we should expect an improved iPhone 6 screen more than anything else (read: Apple HDTVs) as a result of that patent acquisition. The new LCD screen, specifically a p-Si LCD screen, is described by Toshiba Mobile Display as featuring "low-temperature poly-silicon" technology, a next-generation display format that allows for thinner and lighter screens that consume less power than traditional LCD screens.
What's troubling to many current Apple fans and prospective iPhone buyers is that with all the talk of iPhone 5 being less than stellar in terms of upgrades, many would-be upgraders may delay purchasing the iPhone 5 in the fall of 2011 (its rumored release date) in favor of the iPhone 6, which may boast everything from 4G LTE connectivity to NFC technology.

Well, Apple will slowly phase out Samsung and LG, especially after the patent wars, I like Samsung's stuff but for some reason their components and devices are lame.

If this is true (probably not). Then use the extra space from the LCD for battery space. I don't think it needs to be thinner.

All I want is a supercomputer implanted in my skull. Call me when brainOS 5.0 is released. Though maybe I should wait for 6.0 to be released. I think that version enables telekinesis. Tempting...

If 3G owners bought the 3GS, then iPhone 4 owners will buy the 5, hands down. There is no way it could be a lesser upgrade than that.

If it's a legitimate rumor then why is everyone upset that it's being posted? I like the idea I can learn everything about upcoming devices and future technology. It seems to me everyone is upset because their IP5 experience is getting ruined with newer device speculation. Get a grip guys it's just an article.

I like articles like this - but then I love hearing about cool new technologies.

I guess some people don't know how to process a news in their brains, either. Every rumor/ news article is based off of something, and that something has a certain percentage of a chance of being true/ correct. It's the likeliness, or unlikeliness, of that percentage that I (and others) find fascinating.

This is simply how the news works. In a perfect world, absolutely only the facts will be reported on. But, finding those facts isn't exactly a smooth process - facts don't just materialize out of thin air - there's an intelligence gathering phase where information comes in, gets dropped, elevated, etc. THAT'S HOW NEWS WORKS, CHILDREN. You won't get the whole and complete story right off the bat.

Sharp is a poor excuse for a tv and I doubt the phone picture will be much better. Sorry if I affend anyone but after working around tvs for quite some time you start to see what is really going on. Hopefully they don't try to put yellow in the iPhone display. Gosh that was a terrible idea. Panasonic is the best. Hands down.
