  • Apple Plucking More 'Cloud' and Data Storage Talent from Rivals

Last weekend, Wiley reported that several top PR executives from Activision and Nintendo are coming to Apple, as the Cupertino tech giant gears up to better focus on the merits of iOS gaming with these new hires. In addition to the PR muscle Apple is poaching from gaming rivals, it now appears that Apple's plans for future cloud-based services is prompting new hires at an escalating rate.

According to published reports this week, Kevin Timmons, the former general manager of Microsoft's data center group, has been hired by Apple. Timmons was the big man in data storage at Microsoft for two years. Previously, he spent ten years in operations at Yahoo.

When All Things Digital looked into Timmons' new job, few details turned up, but indications have surfaced that his role "may extend beyond his datacenter expertise," an interesting development in light of "recent chatter about Apple's rumored cloud initiatives." At this time, it isn't clear where Timmons will be stationed, although some expect it to be at the company's gargantuan new data center in North Carolina.

The news today of Timmons arrival at Apple punctuates a week of headlines that give further support to longstanding rumors that Apple is ramping up its aspirations for cloud-based services. On Wednesday, in fact, we reported that Apple is actively seeking (on its job posting board) new cloud-friendly engineers. Apple has posted several new curious job listings, one of which is for a "Cloud Systems Software Engineer." In the posting, Apple says the new hire will be absorbed into a "small team" entrusted with the responsibility of bulking up "the future of cloud services at Apple."

Ya know....All this "Cloud" stuff could just be for Apple's internal use and not for a consumer level cloud service.

Wonder how good he is when he can't hold a job at MS for 2 years before switching, and worked at yahoo during the time when it is getting butt kicked by google don't show how good he is either... From the picture it looks like he is a paper pusher.

True that. Hasn't Gates already committed half his fortune to charity when he dies? What has Steve Jobs done? Not that I doubt Steve Jobs philanthropy, I just haven't heard if he has done anything noteworthy.

^^Bill Gates is a weird person.
If I have a lot of money I would not give so much, maybe only a small percentage but never up to 1/2. BTW is he still running the company? I think he occassionally shows up but day to day business is handled by others right?

yeah he's chairman of the board but doesn't really get involved much with running the company.

if you had 50 billion then giving even 25 billion (right now, he'll probably have a lot more by the time he dies) is a big amount but chump change to him. any one of us could easily live on even 1 billion. he doesn't even need the 25 but i'm sure he'll invest it wisely in trusts for his kids and other ventures.

Chinese have a saying "wealth do not last past 3 generations" if I am that rich I would like to be the one that disproves this.

Yea,I'm sure your grand kids would benefit off the money but they aren't the only ones who could benefit off it.there's like tons of other people out there who could really use that money and donating it to them would be a way to help them.Try understanding that if you were in their shoes that you might want others to help you somehow.

maybe when I have that kind of money, but right now I am not even close. Bill Gates make more in 1 minute of his life than I do for the year (I think).

You do know the real meaning behind that quote, right?

It is that the reason wealth doesn't last past 3 generations is because if the grandfather made the money then it is not guaranteed that A. the kids of the grandson will exist, B. the grandson will have enough left, or C. that the grandson would actually give the money to his kids.

grandson/granddaughter can be used interchangeably in this case but I choose the easier way to write it.

in most times when the grandfather is still alive he can influence where the money goes(son/grandson) but once the 4th generation comes in(son's kids) and grandfather passes away he no longer has that influence and the money tends to be squandered. hence the 3 generations thing.
