  • So-Called Apple Smart TV May Be Released Later This Year

Apple may be moving at a much faster pace than originally anticipated with the company's long expected but still un-confirmed newest project - an Internet-connected high-def flat screen television set. According to the latest reports, this rumored high-end product could debut as soon as late 2011.

Ticonderoga Securities Brian White said this week that Apple is poised to jump into the $100 billion LCD TV market much sooner than expected and all signs point to that eventuality. The evidence? White says the "data points" he's picked up overseas suggests that Apple's "Smart TV" is coming soon.

"Our research suggests this Smart TV would go well beyond the miniature $99 second-generation Apple TV that the company released last fall and provide a full-blown TV product for consumers," White told investors Wednesday. "The combination of Apple's powerful ecosystem, industrial design savvy, powerful brand and ability to reinvent product categories could make Apple a powerful force in the TV world over the next few years," he said.

Of course, you may be saying to yourself "haven't I already heard this report?" If so, you're correct. Several months ago, Wall Street analyst Gene Munster similarly weighed in on the prospect of a connected-TV from Apple, saying that the new product would debut sometime next year. Although it isn't clear which analyst (if either) is correct in their reported timetables for launch, it is obvious that Apple is, indeed, working on something big - something that suggests to multiple analysts and news media outlets that a "smart TV" could be Apple's next big thing.

This is probably the reason that 'Apple TV' is called 'Apple TV' and not 'iTV'. They were probably saving the name for this.

Sounds like a great idea. I'm sure apple will bring new features to the table " outside the box " that other companies haven't previously explored. Also, I'm curious to see what the resolution of these TV's will be. We all know how retina revolutionized phone screens. Maybe a retina tv screen?

I'd say it will probably be not be cheap, but it will be quality, based on the Apple price/performance track record.

When has an Apple product not been expensive? Aside from the Mini and Apple TV, all of their products are crazy expensive.

Have you not seen the price on their 27inch LED, its close to 1000. Imagine a LED that is twice as big and has all of these features added, like the reports in the past indicated that you wouldnt need a cable box a DVR or apple TV. Im thinking about 2500 for a 46 to 50 inch. And that would be a generous price. If the Bose TV cost about that much, imagine what the Apple will cost cosnidering a lot more features than just speakers

Then you'd have to watch TV through a million fingerprints. I'm OCD about cleaning my screens.

Same. I'm constantly cleaning my TV, laptop, and iPhone screen.

If Apple came out with a TV I would buy it. I do enjoy my Google TV but why not have both?!?

I think when this thing finally hits the market, it'll be big. I love my ATV2 but w/o PLEX, I wouldn't be wanting to buy one for each room in my home. I'd guess that it will be jailbreakable. As far as price, i'm guessing over $2K easy for a 55 inch LED TV. Hopefully they'll unveil it at WWDC.

How is $2,500 expensive for a 50" TV? That's what the good quality one's cost now.

If it can support all the emulators running on an iPhone... N64 and below... It'd be on my Christmas list.

Not that I'd really want to play Zelda OOT with a 4 button Apple remote.

I don't think the entry level iPad is too expensive...
