  • Apple Rumored to Purchase 12 Petabytes of Storage for iTunes

Apple has reportedly been stocking up on storage. According to published reports this week, Apple has placed an order for 12 petabytes (12,000 terabytes) with Isilon Systems. The additional storage will supposedly be used for videos on iTunes. The source who tipped off the press is only described as a source from EMC, which, incidentally, recently announced plans to acquire Isilon for $2.25 billion.

Initial reaction to the reports, naturally, prompted many to speculate that Apple is finally ready to introduce cloud-based iTunes storage features - or "digital lockers" as they're widely referred to. It should be noted, however, that no coverage of Apple's supposed 12 petabyte purchase has acknowledged those longstanding (but still rumored) plans.

StorageNewsletter.com speculates that Apple's deal with Isilon to scoop up all that storage space likely puts Apple at the top of Isilon's largest client list. And it's a list with no shortage of big names - ABC, Clear Channel, Kodak MySpace, NBC Universal, Sony, World Wrestling Entertainment, XM Satellite Radio, and others.

Apple's move to bolster video storage capacity isn't largely being regarded tonight as a surprise move given Apple's dominance in the online digital music and movie space - a highly lucrative realm that continues to an increasingly profitable golden cow for the team in Cupertino.

I wouldn't get too excited in terms of thinking tons of content will be stored on 12PB.
When you take the same files stored multiple times, data backup and redundancy into account, it's more realistic to look at it as more like 1 or 2 PB of media stored across the 12PB

      and
      1024 Petabytes = 1 Exabyte
      1024 Exabytes = 1 Zettabyte
      1024 Zettabyte = 1 Yottabyte

Did you really think it was necessary to post the same comment in multiple threads?

It's obvious you have no clue what you're talking about. At 12 petabytes, if you figure 1 million users (which is ridiculously small for Apple) then each user would only be allocated 12 gigabytes. Though when you take into account redundancy and overhead you're looking at a smaller 1-3 gigabytes for each user. Given that Apple has 10's of millions of iOS users out there this is nowhere near enough storage. With 10 million users that 1-3 gigabytes per user shrinks to 100-300 megabytes. Clearly Apple is going to need a whole lot more than 12 petabytes if they hope to create a storage locker for music, video, and pictures.

How much does this amount of storage cost? I took a quick look on the Isilon website but couldn't find anything.

Too much probably! Figure you can get a 1TB Hard Drive for just under a 100 bucks times that by about 12,000 and it probably costs way more than what that equals up to.

Ya, me too. That's not nearly enough though. Apple needs like double or three times that amount. (sarcasm).

      Pretty cool however.
