  • BananaTunes - Stream Music from iDevice to a Mac

We posted about Banana TV a while back, which lets you use a Mac as an AirPlay destination for video. We're working with developer Erica Sadun to market the app, and so I see the support emails daily - the most common one being "when can I stream audio"?

With the recent discovery of the AirTunes private key, it's now possible to integrate streaming audio from an iOS device to any Mac running a new beta build of Banana Tunes (which is the app Erica is using to beta test this new streaming possibility). She's been feverishly developing and researching the past couple weeks to get audio streaming working from iOS to OS X. The hope is it will be integrated into a future build of Banana TV.

You can download the beta files from her FTP at ericasadun.com/ananab. There's two links there - an install pack (read the readme inside to see how to install) and the actual Banana Tunes app.

Test away, folks! Erica would love your feedback on how the app is working, as it will help development.

You didn't install the install pack correctly then.

Dunno - there are two files in the install pack, both should go to /usr/local/lib/

Why didn't you read thorugh the entire set of comments. I mentioned the benefits of this:

Also, it works with almost any app that allows for AirPlay audio streaming. So you could play non-iTunes media through a Mac's audio out, just like you could with an Airport Express or AppleTV.
It basically means any audio output, even game audio and the like, can be pumped to a Mac as if it was an AppleTV/AirportEx. That's actually a good idea IMO, and a number of people were wanting this for a long time... even before AirTunes was renamed AirPlay. Hence why Airfoil was marketed and sold so well until now.

You said your mac is a late 2007 macbook. IIRC, any Mac older than a 2008 model has issues running some 64bit-only applications (Banana Tunes is a 64bit-only application in its current iteration).

So that may mean that your computer may not be able to BananaTunes very well or at all. If so, you might have to wait for a version that includes 32bit support or wait for it to be implemented into BananaTV.

ADDENDUM: Also, I know there have been others who worked on the original package (link here) for compatibility with OS X. That you could compile that and use for yourself. It's somewhat more complicated though, as it uses terminal and daemons.

Great App and thanks to Erica for getting it out there as I was failing to get ShairPort compiled.

I am seeing an issue that I'd like to better understand though.
BananaTunes runs fine and I'm able to stream to my iMac but when I turn on my amp that's connected via HDMI (Audio and Video) the audio stream doesn't come out of the speakers.

When I turn off the Amp it resumes again on the iMac.

This is a pri0 scenario for me as my iMac is the center of my media setup (projector and speakers in another room) and I've been wanting to wander around and stream pandora to the iMac and have it pumped around the house.

Appreciate any advice on this. The Amp is an Onkyo TX-SR608

      Thanks
      Adam.

Aww seems iTunes to iTunes support is non existant, interestingly enough it is supported by airfoil as an airplay target speaker.

EDIT: Airfoil stops using the speaker after a few minutes.

Thanks for this great app Erica!
