Yesterday, Apple released iOS 7.1 to the public
. iOS 7.1 closes the evasi0n7 jailbreak, so it's advised that jailbreakers stay far away from iOS 7.1
On the other hand, if you're using the iPhone 4, Apple's oldest device that can still run the latest version of Apple's iOS 7 firmware, then iOS 7.1 might be a worthy upgrade. In the release notes for iOS 7.1, Apple noted that the update included "performance improvements for iPhone 4," and let me tell you... did it make a world of difference
Obviously, if you're jailbroken, and happily so, then you should still stay away. But if you're just not finding the jailbreak to be worth it, or you have no intentions of jailbreaking your iPhone 4 in the near future, then this is something to think about.
I installed iOS 7.1 on my iPhone 4 this morning; not yesterday, because the download was taking way too long thanks to all the people downloading the update yesterday. Immediately after my device turned back on for the first time after the restore, my iPhone 4 was snappy and quick. Much snappier and quicker than it was on iOS 7.0.6.
My iPhone 4 was running iOS 7.0.6 prior to upgrading to iOS 7.1, and simple things such as opening applications, closing applications, unlocking the device, or pulling up the keyboard and typing on it would seem SOOOOOO
slow and laggy that the device would feel unusable.
I never had this problem on my iPhone 5, so I obviously won't have the intention of upgrading my iPhone 5, which is happily jailbroken on iOS 7.0.6. But my iPhone 4 was just never happy running iOS 7.0.6. It would take a number seconds for things to open up, but after upgrading to iOS 7.1, scrolling is so much more fluid, animations aren't as jittery, and loading applications seems noticeably faster. Overall, the iPhone 4 seems more responsive to my input with iOS 7.1.
It's unfortunate that Apple waited until the non-jailbreakable iOS 7.1 (at least for now) to implement this major performance improvement for the iPhone 4, but for those that are not going to jailbreak their iPhone 4, iOS 7.1 might be a considerable option.
If you're not going to jailbreak your iPhone 4 for any reason, then you may want to go through with the upgrade to iOS 7.1. But as always, if you have the intention of jailbreaking your iPhone 4, or it's jailbroken already and you don't want to lose it, then you should avoid iOS 7.1 by all means.
Will you be upgrading?
