  • Apple Releases Apple TV 4.2.1 Update to Fix Flickering

On Tuesday, Apple released an update for its Apple TV (2nd gen) that addresses the widespread complaints of video flickering common when the set top box is used on older model high-definition televisions. Last week, Apple said it was actively working on a fix and assured afflicted Apple TV users that a software update to remedy the problem would be coming soon.

If you haven't already grabbed it, the Apple TV Software Update (4.2.1) is available now for download directly from the second-generation Apple TV. According to Apple's formal announcement of the update's availability, the software tweak addresses:
    • TV compatibility: Addresses issues that may cause the screen to flicker or display incorrect color on some older TVs.
    • Wake from sleep: Addresses an issue where Apple TV may not wake from sleep.
    • Audio: Addresses an issue where audio may not be heard on some TV models after switching from another input.
    • Stability and performance: Apple TV software Update 4.2.1 includes stability and performance fixes for Apple TV.
The so-called flickering epidemic was first reported the day of Apple's February release of Apple TV 4.2, which also brought with it support for AirPlay in third-party applications, and as sports fan know, live streaming games from NBA League Pass and MLB.TV.

The firmware scheme for the AppleTV seems a little off. Even the direct link to Apple shows it as 4.3.

I really want one but not until I can receive my Slingbox stream. SlingMedia really needs to create an app for the ATV2

Even when it first came out it had that weird issue where it would display a system version and then an ios version that were different #s entirely. Showed 4.1 for one and 4.2 for the other i believe.

I think I'll stick where I'm at for now with all these small problems popping up.

My Netflix isn't working either. It started today as far as I know. I last used it Saturday, so it must be server issues.

I had the same problem with Netflix, and found that the date/time were wrong. i manually modified the date/time thru SSH and BSD commands and all works fine... some issue with the time server...

LOL! I JUST ordered one. I figured I can get rid of my Roku now since we can do Nexflix on it. I can also get rid of the ugly cable from my iPad to the TV since I will be able to stream now via Air Play. Win win. Get it!!

Do they still run some of the same iOS code? That's is how the ATV
      is hackable, right?

I would imagine they have similarities. I really coudnt answer that in detail. This particular update though only has do to with Apple TV and wouldnt affect the other iDevices so they wouldnt need an update.
