Apple TV Getting its Own App Store?
To say that the Apple TV has been ignored lately is putting it mildly.
Long overdue for a hardware update and getting along on the occasional update delivering little more than one or two new channels, Apple TV's future hasn't been very exciting in recent months... okay, maybe years
. But that could change very, very soon.
There are rumblings today that Apple is bulking up its Apple TV development team. The reason? Apple may soon open for business a platform for third-party channels to reach the Apple TV. In short, it would be the channel-equivalent of an App Store designed for the Apple TV.
This morning, our friends at AppleInsider reported that Apple is currently looking to fill two new job openings. The first is for an Apple TV "Content Partner Engineer." The other is for a "Software QA Engineer" on the Apple TV team. While there are myriad purposes for Apple to fill these positions beyond the desire to create an app store for Apple TV, it certainly seems likely that the company may be planning to dramatically boost the amount of content available through the set-top box.
It should also be noted that Apple hasn't updated its Apple TV (hardware) since March of 2012.
