  • Steve Jobs Once Considered for CEO Slot at Google

What a different tech world we may be inhabiting today had Steve Jobs actually taken the position of CEO at Google some ten years ago. If it sounds like a fictionalized daydream, think again. According to Venture capitalist John Doerr, Google's young founders were provided with an opportunity to meet with several Silicon Valley powerhouses back in 2000 in their search for sound corporate leadership. Larry Page and Sergey Brin subsequently met with leaders from Intel, Amazon, and a number of prominent industry moguls.

But as Doerr now admits, the founding fathers of Google initially would consider only one man for the job of CEO at Google. You guessed it. Steve Jobs. Unfortunately, Jobs was busy taking Apple to new heights - a journey that millions of satisfied iDevice customers are thankful for. Still, as Brian Caulfield of Forbes pointed out yesterday, Google's eventual installation of Eric Schmidt as CEO didn't turn out too badly. Shares of Google, after all, have soared 400% since the company's IPO six years ago.

Although we don't know what would have ultimately become of Apple - or even Google for that matter - had Steve Jobs accepted a position with the internet start-up, it certainly is amusing to speculate.

Shows how unique Jobs is. BTW, glad it turned out the way that it did.

I can happily say Im glad Steve Jobs stuck with Apple to create a huge corporate success. Even though he didn't go with google the advancements google has made with out him are feats in themselves

It would be very interesting to see the out come of that "what if" situation.

How would Google be different with Steve Jobs at the helm, and how would Apple be different without him.

Would a merger of Apple and Google in 2000 been possible?

I think he deserves credit for having his employees think different.

People talk like he, himself, invented everything Apple has. That simply can't be true. Steve once called himself iCEO, which turned out to be very true.

His two biggest contributions to Apple (since his return in '96) have been; smart business practices, and the "i."

It would be interesting to see what would have happened if Jobs had gone to Google, especially considering his disdain for third-party hardware. Maybe it would be exactly the opposite... With Android being on a single device, and iOS on a few hundred, lol.

I wouldn't waste too much time with that poster. He or she is a troll of trolls. Bashes everything apple... Not sure why the metfan from Austin is on here. Possibly a C student with no time and a lot of anger.

Yea I agree it turned out great the way it did with Steve leading Apple. Google is a great success, but did get help from all the devices and computers that access the service. Well done to both!

Look up google bro! They are the number one company that offers free services! So many of their products are free, it is threatening other companies, and forcing them to do the same!

And apple doesn't decide the price of apps! The price depends on how much the dev thinks it is worth!!!!

I think what Sem656 was implying was that Googles services would not be free if Steve Jobs had been CEO.

      Noooooo! Haha

Jobs is definitely where he belongs, at Apple changing the world of technology, on the Board at Disney, and Chairman of Pixar! Maybe he'll add Google in there when he needs something to do during retirement
