  • Apple's iWatch to utilize a Sapphire Screen unlike the Next-Gen iPhone

Recent reports from the Far East suggest that while Apple is currently trialing iPhone units bearing sapphire-covered displays, the material will make its debut on the so-called “iWatch” rather than on the company’s next-generation handset this year. The price is said to be a deciding factor as Apple has apparently been unable to devise a way to add sapphire to the iPhone without substantially increasing the device’s cost. The rumors cropped up on a number of Chinese websites and were first noted by GforGames.

Apple has reportedly not run into similar issues with the still-unannounced iWatch. The rumors indicate that the wrist-worn device’s 2-inch diagonal display will in fact bear a protective sapphire layer, much like the sapphire crystals found in several high-end watches.

Media from Taiwan reported late last month that Apple’s primary iPhone manufacturing partner, Foxconn, had successfully completed assembly testing of prototype iPhone units with sapphire displays. At the same time, Apple’s existing sapphire suppliers were seen making significant investments in equipment and tooling thought to point to a large order from Cupertino. This is when it was revealed that Apple had taken delivery of a substantial number of sapphire furnaces and inspection equipment at its new Arizona sapphire manufacturing facility.

Some industry analysts speculate that once the plant is fully operational, it would have enough capacity to manufacture sapphire display components for as many as 200 million handsets per year. Apple currently uses sapphire as a lens cover for the iPhone’s rear-facing camera and as a protective layer over the iPhone 5S’ flagship Touch ID feature.

I really hope apple doesn't change the form factor of the iPhone. I'm ok with a SLIGHTLY bigger form to make a 4.5 or 4.7 edge to edge display, but that concept photo is huge. I don't want a Galaxy Note. But who am I kidding, I'll probably buy the 6 no matter what it looks like.

When I visit any cell phone store I see many different phones and 90% of them have a big screen. If Apple doesn't deliver a bigger screen (which I know they will) they won't survive.

You must have missed that the article specifically mentioned the previous day's report of difficulties and even added "The design 'freeze' for the iPhone 6 after which no further changes will be made to the device is reportedly set for April this year."
Like I said, they are trying to include sapphire but may not be able to. It's part of the prototyping process and isn't contradictory at all.

It's just like how Samsung was trying to include a flexible display with the Galaxy Note 3 but couldn't get manufacturing volume up enough and had to debut it with the limited-volume Korea-only Samsung Galaxy Round instead.

Right on! The current screens cost Apple about 5 bucks each. A sapphire screen would cost about $50. I'll happily pay an extra 50 dollars for an unbreakable screen, but you can bet Apple will charge through the ***** for it.
