If you're on iOS 7 and you want your incoming notifications to be announced out loud so that you don't have to pull your phone out of your pocket all the time to know what that vibration you just felt was for, then a new jailbreak tweak called Speak Notification
by iOS developer merdok is now available in Cydia that will do just that.
Speak Notification works just like previous jailbreak tweaks like Aloud
, both of which have not yet been updated with iOS 7 support. When you get a notification from an application, you'll get alerted by voice what application you're getting the alert from, who it's from, and some of the content of the alert.
After installing the tweak, you'll get a new preferences pane in the Settings application where you can configure its behavior:
From the main preferences pane, you'll be able to enable or disable the tweak's notification announcing on demand, pick the applications that the tweak is allowed to announce notifications for, and choose an announcement format.
In the speak options cell, you can enable or disable notification sounds, enable or disable queuing speaking, and pick a cancel button to silence the voice notifications at any time.
From the speak conditions cell, you can choose to have the device speak notifications when a Bluetooth device is connected, or when headphones are connected. You can also set individual rules for when the device is locked, unlocked, or anywhere, such as specific times for when the tweak is allowed to announce notifications, and if it should be allowed to speak when Do Not Disturb is enabled.
In the speech settings cell, you can pick a language for the voice to speak in, a custom volume for the speaking voice (separate from your actual device volume), and a speaking rate for those that might want the talking to be faster or slower than the default.
Speak Notification works great for both stock and third-party App Store applications. It doesn't require that you have a device with Siri on it, so you can even use this tweak on an iPhone 4. The only requirements are that iOS 7 is installed and that you have banner notifications enabled. The tweak can be had from Cydia's BigBoss repository for the very fair price of $1.49.
