The temperature outside is one thing that's always changing that a lot of people like to keep track of. Unfortunately, Apple doesn't give you any way of easily discerning what the temperature is like outside without having to open an application up to see it. Arguably, the temperature is something that should be in your face, just like the time. You don't have to open the Clock application to see the time; it's shown in the Status Bar, so why not the temperature?
A new free jailbreak tweak called StatusWeather
by iOS developer Smartviper E75 is now available in Cydia's BigBoss repository that allows you to add the current temperature via the stock iOS Weather application to the Status Bar, directly to the right of the time, as shown above.
If you double-tap on the temperature in the Status Bar, you'll get a small alert box that shows you the current temperature outside, the humidity level, and the "Feels Like" temperature. There's a dismiss button at the bottom of the alert box for closing the alert box, and there's also a launch weather button that will launch the Weather application for you.
The temperature in the Status Bar is a great idea, actually, but the tweak itself doesn't come without its shortcomings. One of the most obvious from the screenshot example is that the "Feels Like" temperature looks like it makes an incorrect conversion between Fahrenheit and Celsius somewhere down the line. And another issue is that you need to enable 24-hour time format to make this tweak work correctly, otherwise a long strand of random numbers will appear in your Status Bar in between the time and the temperature.
The tweak adds a preferences pane to the Settings application where you can configure a variety of different options:
You can enable or disable the tweak on demand, enable or disable the tweak for the lock screen on demand, enable or disable the double-tap gesture to show the additional information in an alert box, change the weather metric from Fahrenheit to Celsius, and choose a custom refresh interval for how often the tweak should change the Status Bar temperature.
If you don't mind changing your Status Bar clock to 24-hour time, then StatusWeather might be a cool tweak to add to your tweak collection. The developer notes that he's working on a fix for this in a future update, but as the tweak sits right now, it feel like its in beta stages. On the other hand, having instant access to the temperature outside in the Status Bar is a handy tool to have. If you want to give it a try, you can download it for free from Cydia's BigBoss repository.
Note: this tweak doesn't work on iPads since there is no Weather application on them.
