  • Sony Granted Permission to Subpoena Log of IP Addresses That Visited Geohot's Website

The saga of Geohot continues. This week Federal Magistrate Joseph Spero officially authorized Sony to subpoena Geohot's web provider to secure the official log of IP addresses that visited GeoHot.com between January 2009 and today.

The reason given for the controversial decision to give Sony access to the log is that the data will provide an accurate picture of the extent to which the defendant distributed jailbreak files. Additionally, the information will help determine whether Sony should sue George "Geohot" Hotz in New Jersey or San Francisco. NJ is Geohot's home state, but Sony contends that San Francisco is where the files were most downloaded.

Compounding the situation further is the reference in court documents to Sony's desire to similarly obtain any and all tweets that Geohot released with regard to his PS3 hack. Sony also wants user information on the individuals that posted comments on Geohot's blog as well those who viewed his video on YouTube, which demonstrated jailbreak tools in use.

At this time, it doesn't appear that Sony is aiming to cast a wide net and seek legal action against everyone who used Geohot's jailbreak. Rather, Sony is arguing that it simply wants to know how far and how deep the "damage" goes. Of course, this is merely what Sony is saying at the moment. Ultimately, it isn't known just how many people could be targeted by the consumer electronics giant in their ongoing quest to scare the living daylights out of jailbreakers everywhere.

Well, It seems Sony is trying to show that the hack was aimed at Californians so that Sony can get the case moved to the Ultra ANTI-CONSTITUTIONAL Judging Northern California Court System. Sony knows they cannot win in Jersey (WHERE THE HACK HAPPENED). I say, we should all start Downloading the code, visiting and commenting the site from anywhere but California just to throw them off.

I agree that Sony is wasting thier "petty cash" on this whole thing but the fact that people are playing pirated PS3 games...i'm not cool with.

We need to unite as a community to fight them. When the first person grows their courage and stands up to them, others will surely follow. They CAN'T sue everyone.

With as much ignorance being shown in this thread about what this case is actually about, considering how we are more in the loop collectively, it makes it much more understandable how/why the judge can make such poor decisions.

The case is simply about Geohot distributing a jailbreak for the PS3. The rk is apparently "copyrighted" which i still have yet to see where in the sony contract does it state that the master key is copyrighted.

It all boils down to one thing: PIRACY. But in reality, not everyone pirates everything. If i owned a ps3 i wouldnt pirate games (since most pirated games are usually ****** quality or dont work correctly). I have enough money to support my gaming needs in terms of console games.

Geohot hasnt broken any law by distributing that code. In fact im sure it could be changed. Sony shouldve changed it with a patch and moved on just like apple does with their firmware updates.

This is a prime example on why i will be buying a new 360 for my birthday and NOT a ps3. thankfully i threw my old ps2 out. Sony is just another hitler.

I don't understand why the judge is even letting this continue any further.

Jailbreaking has been ruled 100% LEGAL, pirating has not of course, but even GeoHot says he has taken steps to prevent piracy...so what are the damages here?

      lets look at the "damages"

      1. Sony no longer holds the title "not hacked gaming console"

      2. sony mite lose some money thanks to piracy (but not a lot)

The damage here is that sony is just pissed cuz they finally had their console hacked. They just throw in the piracy to hide the real rage behind the mask

Sony is potentially going to be going after us, the end user, now. I am sure they will make an example of a handful of people that they deem to be the "worst" through various criteria they come up with. Indeed this is bad news...

I bet apple is gonna start a shitstorm with jailbreakers soon. People will be jailed for having a jailbroken device in public.

We need to find a New Jersey proxy server so we can trick Sony. Or can someone in NJ just set one up.

what???? Sony has no right to my info. Visiting the site has little to do with who used the key. I don't own a ps3. I decided to boycott sony after they sold me a ps3 and then removed otheros. Effectively stealing the product I payed for. But now it's getting to the point where it's not just going to be geeks boycotting them. Everyone who thinks they have private property rights or freedom of speech or freedom to do security research or freedom to tinker with things or privacy in dealing with a web host or protection as a consumer or who has half a brain should boycott Sony starting now. Call them and let them know you are doing it. Change your psn info to f*** Sony and remove the cc info. Send them an email or a lot of emails like I did.

Let's just take a second to remember what happened to Paulson when they pissed of a few young kinds.

It only takes a few minutes to Lear how to use ddos programs. Sony should stop acting like they are high and mighty. This is the world of the electron and the switch. This is our world. They are guests.

No one worth there salt will code for Sony after this. So let's just sit back and watch them die off.

by no mean I'm against jailbraking or geohot

i really think these not all about sony going after geohot and jailbreaking. Its more about the video games being pirated and download while using the jailbreak. Not getting better functionality or what ever.
the hacking of the video games and network. by network i mean the store.

because if you think about it is A NETWORK that is FREE. (exp the store.),they could of stop and said like Microsoft time to pay, but they keep patching it. Then on other hand Sony is getting sh!t from video game makers about there games, like from ACTIVISION. so scene's geohot name is the biggest name out there why not go after him. An he was saying that he was one the first to jailbroke the ps3.

      thats my two pennys

I hope there is lots of publicity so the public can see just how evil and manipulative Sony is so they can avoid/boycott their products. Days of Sony's dominance in areas with great products are over- there is more competition now, so they just seem like the spoilt jealous child wanting their ball back . I thought Apple was pushy and nasty, but Sony makes Apple seem like angels.
