  • Steve Jobs Introduced the iPhone Seven Years Ago Today

Today marks the seventh anniversary of the introduction of the iPhone – a presentation that took place as part of the keynote of Macworld Expo 2007 in San Francisco. Although the device didn’t launch until over six months later, the presentation offered the public the first look at what Steve Jobs introduced as three devices in one: a touchscreen iPod, a phone and an “Internet communicator.” Jobs mentioned the following during his introduction:

Today, we're introducing three revolutionary products. The first one is a widescreen iPod with touch controls. The second is a revolutionary mobile phone. And the third is a breakthrough Internet communications device. So, three things: a widescreen iPod with touch controls, a revolutionary mobile phone, and a breakthrough Internet communications device. An iPod, a phone, and an Internet communicator. An iPod, a phone...are you getting it? These are not three separate devices. This is one device. And we are calling it iPhone. Today, Apple is going to reinvent the phone.
Former Apple engineer Andy Grignon, who was in charge of the radios on the original iPhone, gave a behind-the-scenes look at how Apple patched together demos for the introduction, with Steve Jobs showing off developmental devices fully of buggy software and hardware issues. At the time, the iPhone team knew that everything had to go just right for the live iPhone demo to succeed and it did. The smartphone industry came to fruition as Apple continued to scramble and finish work on the iPhone at the time.

Ironically, Apple originally had been interested in developing a tablet first known as the “Safari Pad,” but as noted by a number of sources including Jobs himself, the company shifted gears once it became clear how revolutionary the multi-touch interface developed for the tablet could be for a smartphone. Apple’s tablet wouldn’t surface until the launch of the iPad in 2010, three years after the introduction of the iPhone.

Now, seven years after the famous keynote, the iPhone has seen significant enhancements in practically every area and still remains recognizable as Apple has maintained the overall look of a sleek design with a larger touchscreen and a single round home button on the face of the device.

The good old days! When apple used to charge to update. Now they will add any feature to get you to upgrade and lose your jailbreak.

Funny how he mentioned the iPod touch before the iPhone itself :P

Pretty incredible to think that the whited00r team has managed to recreate iOS 7's experience on the original iPhone as well. I still love the design of the first iPhone probably more than any model after it, something about its aluminum back and bulkiness makes it very satisfying to hold in the hand (even as the components are outdated).

I remember I was a freshman in college and I went out right after class and bought one outside of contract.

I remember at the time it was released, I had a Motorola Q. Then my co-worker came in with the iPhone and I asked to see it.... My mind was officially BLOWN! Needless to say that my Moto Q's days were numbered... lol

Yeah. Think about all that it revolutionized. We don't even use the telephone that much anymore / we text. And how many of us still have "home telephones"?

Yeah... I remember after I came back from Pataya, Thailand can't wait to get my hand on the device I went straight to AT&T a couple of days after and got one and it was amazing one of a kind revolutionary phone and I spent over $700 for it and still happy. I don't even care how much it will cost me hahaha..... Until now I still own an iPhone since day one and now own an iPhone 5S Space Grey 64gb model and believe me I know we will never catch up with technologies these days and have people telling me I will go broke before the new one comes out , but, for me as long as I'm happy with what I have from Apple! And the iPhone 5S is way beyond of those other smartphone out there out in the market!!!!! Steve Jobs may you R.I.P. and thanks for all the Apple devices that I have own until now and there's still more to come... Lols
