Apple Opens Online Store in Thriving Chinese Marketplace
Apple's focus on China won't be limited this year to its recent deal with China Mobile to deliver the iPhone to the world's largest mobile operator. As it turns out, Apple is just getting warmed up in China.
The Wall Street Journal confirmed today that Apple has just opened an official store on Tmall, which is hailed as a major online marketplace run by Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.
Tmall presently hosts more than 70,000 merchants, many of which are brands just as recognizable as Apple. Nike and Gap, for example, were on board with a Tmall storefront long before Apple.
The iPhone-maker hasn't publicly discussed its new online market, but an Alibaba spokeswoman confirmed to the WSJ that the new Tmall page in question is definitely Apple’s.
"Apple already runs its own online store in China, but its new Tmall store could provide a new channel to reach China’s fast-growing population of online shoppers," today's report reads.
