  • Geohot Raises Big Bucks Over The Weekend, Ends Donation Program for Now

As we reported yesterday, well-known hacker Geohot sought help from our community this weekend in his ongoing legal skirmish with Sony. In the wake of Geohot's brewing courtroom travails, the iconic hacker established a "legal defense fund" via PayPal to help offset legal costs, which - according to Geohot - have already topped $10,000. Well, help was sought and help was given. Today, Geohot updated his blog with the following message:

First round of donations is closed. Thank you so so much for all of your help, things are looking up money wise. Expect to see a few more lawyers on my responses! I have enough to cover my legal fees for the time being. And in the absolute worst case scenario, we donít want Sony getting it :-P For now, the best thing you can do is spread the word. Let people know how Sony treats customers. Let people know Sony would rather sue than be proactive and try to fix the problem. Let people know about laws like the DMCA, which stifle innovation, and donít do anything to fix the problems they were created to solve.
Although it isn't exactly clear how much Geohot raised, we witnessed just in the forum posts at MMI an overwhelmingly positive response to Geohot's plea for help. In some cases, members donated hundreds of dollars a pop to the embattled hacker. Of course, no matter how long Geohot perpetuates his PayPal fundraising efforts, the pockets of his "legal defense fund" will never be as deep as those of Sony. Nonetheless, Geohot isn't willing to go down without a fight.

Lmao, some one is obviously jealous of Geohot. Anyway does it really matter whether greenpois0n release it first or Limera1n ? Everyone can choose which to use? Stop commenting on people and think about it, everyone have their character and attitude. If they don't bother you , why bother them ? Also i looked at one of your post saying "he don't bother to fix the bugs?" anyway if he don't bother why he still released the jailbreak? Might as well don't bother to release and find the exploit? Lastly it's free what more can you ask for? Just like you getting something free and buying something use your money , will the something you get for free is better than the one you buy ? I am just stating the fact. Sorry for my lousy english.

It sickens me to see people tearing up Geo. There would be no themes jailbreaks or anything for the iPhone had people like him and others not pushed the envelope. He could have or anyone for that matter charged for a jb but he gave freely.

I'm behind Geohot one hundred percent. I've been using his Jailbreaks for years now and I'm very grateful for all the hard work that he has put it. I think that this case will set a huge precedent in the community. If Geohot loses this will open the door for Apple to just start suing hackers. I think it is amazing that this young kid is taking this on and defending the community. If you JB, you should donate. Just my opinion.

Just my .02, but he wasn't directly or intentionally enabling piracy therefore he probably didn't think he was doing anything illegal. I don't see him as being some idiot in search of fame -- he just didn't mind attaching his name to what he thought was legitimate work.

People try to make their cars faster all the time by modifying copyrighted mechanical and electronic parts and going against the manufacturer's specs, and this would enable all sorts of laws to be broken. Further more, people brag about this work and try to best each other. It's funny how nobody sees anything wrong with this (until somebody gets hurt), yet modifying your PlayStation and helping others do the same is like committing a cardinal sin to some of you.

He Might have released his Jailbreak a day early for "fame" as you say. But by doing that the Chronic dev team was able to save their own exploit for the next firmware and use the code from Geohot's own exploit. So maybe he did release it for fame, but you always have to consider that maybe he was trying to save everyone some time and just use his exploit so that chronic dev could have a jailbreak ready for when the exploit we are using right now is closed by apple. And one more thing on a side note, i do believe that greenpois0n still uses some of Geohot's code in their current jailbreak. I could be wrong about that though

The statement above would make sense except for the fact that, Geohot didn't take all of Sony's PS3 games and release them on the internet, that my friend is piracy. Now what he did do was release a code on the internet to unlock the PS3 so people would be able to use the Linux install and what not that Sony had advertised when they first sold the product.

I think it's a fair bet by how your thinking is that you are one of the people that jailbreak just to get free apps off the app store which means maybe you should be in court. Now if that was the case I wonder if the above comment would get you some help from the hacking community for when you need help with lawyers and court costs...

No offense to PS3 users but us PC Cod players have had to put up with hacks from day one, the only thing you can do is report those who are hacking and if Sony does their job they will ban them.

      Don't be arrogant.

It's funny to see how people have personal vendettas against Geo which i've still not comprehended yet. If it weren't for Geo, you wouldn't have a jailbroken idevice.

Every celebrity seems cocky to others. No matter who they are, actors, singers, etc. So how is Geo different?

So there is more at stake here than GeoHot's giving the finger to Sony, which by the way I absolutely agree with.
You don't want your secrets out, protect them better.
My next big screen TV will not be Sony.

If he loses, this will get you. This will ruin jailbreaking for you. As of now, we have the stronger hand in terms of the legality of jailbreaking (regardless of how companies try to intimidate us out of it). But this is a card game in which the deck is constantly being shuffled. We may have three of a kind, but if SONY gets the flush, Apple will deal back in.

I say again. If SONY wins, we lose. Flame away.
      ^^^ This.

Of course for GeoHot it's about GeoHot. But really, for the rest of us, it could be ANYONE in the jailbreaking community. Geo was the fast target, he's vocal, but do you really think Sony would have a hard time getting the names of any of the jailbreakers in this community of ours? Do you think they couldn't find YOU if they wanted to?

If GeoHot loses, we will all lose. And that's a fact.

Are you serious dude? Please tell me you're not being a jerk and that this post is just not well thought out. "his self-dug hole"? You've gotta be kidding. He didn't do anything wrong. Sony is being a jackass, and taking things much farther than Apple ever bothered too. He didn't dig any hole. He treated on semi-thin ice, and Sony made sure to break it.

I'm really bored with all of this. He's a dorky kid, with some computers skills, no social skills and a lot of free time. He's done some cool stuff, but legions of followers have succeeded in turning this, let's admit it, pretty obnoxious kid into some sort of holy martyr.

I'm all for being "pro hacking community" but there's inherent risks in such behavior. Getting caught doesn't make someone special, in most cases it makes them sloppy and/or arrogant, and his behavior since has pretty much cemented the latter.

Did he crack it first? Maybe, don't really care to be honest, but the notion that without him this entire community wouldn't exist is just downright silly. There's plenty of brilliant people working in this community. He's just the one who decided to run to the front of the pack, likely to massage a very fragile ego.

Help him if you must, but don't make him out to be something he's not.

Just saying... you may have used his iPhone exploits, but that is beyond the point. THAT is not what you are supporting here. You are supporting his battle against Sony. Frankly I don't see much relevance here.

      You, sir, are delusional.

He poked the bear. Why should we feel OBLIGATED to help? Do you know EXACTLY under what grounds Sony is pushing this lawsuit? He very well may have broken laws or included code that wasn't within his legal right. All I can say is so far the courts are looking in Sony's favor, where they NEVER did for Apple in similar cases. There may very well be more to all this than you or I know.

Why am I reading all of this comments? This isn't getting better. Or perhaps, jailbreaking should rot to death due to arrogant and ignorant users.
