  • Geohot Raises Big Bucks Over The Weekend, Ends Donation Program for Now

    As we reported yesterday, well-known hacker Geohot sought help from our community this weekend in his ongoing legal skirmish with Sony. In the wake of Geohot's brewing courtroom travails, the iconic hacker established a "legal defense fund" via PayPal to help offset legal costs, which - according to Geohot - have already topped $10,000. Well, help was sought and help was given. Today, Geohot updated his blog with the following message:

    First round of donations is closed. Thank you so so much for all of your help, things are looking up money wise. Expect to see a few more lawyers on my responses! I have enough to cover my legal fees for the time being. And in the absolute worst case scenario, we don’t want Sony getting it :-P For now, the best thing you can do is spread the word. Let people know how Sony treats customers. Let people know Sony would rather sue than be proactive and try to fix the problem. Let people know about laws like the DMCA, which stifle innovation, and don’t do anything to fix the problems they were created to solve.
    Although it isn't exactly clear how much Geohot raised, we witnessed just in the forum posts at MMI an overwhelmingly positive response to Geohot's plea for help. In some cases, members donated hundreds of dollars a pop to the embattled hacker. Of course, no matter how long Geohot perpetuates his PayPal fundraising efforts, the pockets of his "legal defense fund" will never be as deep as those of Sony. Nonetheless, Geohot isn't willing to go down without a fight.

      I think the HACK community owes at least a single donation if they have the $$ to give. He's given a lot of good and useful hacks and info for all of us to benefit from. Thank you in advanced GEO Hot!

      I can't believe that people still have the audacity to complain about Geohot this far into it. If you have EVER used blackra1n-limera1n, etc... I mean... COME ON.

      This is not a battle between Company X and 'some kid who you don't like'... This is a battle between SONY, and someone who represents what we do and stand for: Hacking our products for the betterment of using the hardware. Just because Geo plays the game a little louder than YOU would want doesn't change the role he plays in this lawsuit. He's 20 for crying out loud. Were you fully adult at 20? Get off his balls and help him out.

      Its odd he isn't trying to get as much cash as he can. i think that shows that he is a good person. just trying to get what he needs. I hope he wins this for all of us. its bigger then him. this is about what i do every day.

      If you guys understood the full situation with Sony and him better I'm sure you would see where he is coming from in asking for donations.

      He's changed the way I use my PS3 all over, and its pathetic the only way I can thank him was my $10 donation, but alas help is help. Sony is going to try to make an example out of him in court and I dont want to see that happen.

      Jailbreaking for mobile devices was declared legal, it should be no different for PS3. Especially to enable PREVIOUS functions (linux) that were advertised when the console was bought but removed by Sony.

      Hes simply brilliant. If he loses this, and we can't mod our own property, think of all the creativity and designs lost. He helped a device with few flaws become extremely close to flawless. Its honestly hard to think of a homebrew/modding community with Mr. Hotz.

      Though I dont agree with him being an adult, as that rapping video didn't help him. This is something he got himself into. I know he had contributed to the jailbreaking circle, but I can fully say that I haven't used any of his jailbreaks, not because I have something against him but because there was always an alternative.

      Do any of the other hackers give there real names or identities? Or take the fame for there hacks? No. I don't know who comex really is or his personal things. He has contributed to getting himself in trouble.

      I know a lot of people donated, but I didnt, when I saw this and saw that it had got up to 10000 I went and donated to a better cause.

      Just my view on things

      hate him or love him, he started the JB community

      I am in the market for a new flat screen TV. I will make sure to stay clear of Sony.
