  • Job Opening at Apple Raises Suspicions About New Connected TV Line

On February 3rd, MMi covered Piper Jaffray's provocative report suggesting that Apple may finally be gearing up to introduce an entirely new product as soon as 2012. Analyst Gene Munster said Apple will likely use its recent $3.9 billion in component investments to develop large screen displays, probably for a connected Apple television set of at least 50-inches.

While the notoriously hush-hush operations at Apple prevent the company from specifically outlining that which it has up its sleeve, a new job posting on the official Apple website may indirectly confirm that which Apple isn't admitting. Directly referring to "standalone displays" in the job description, Apple is looking for someone to fill this particular position:

This is an excellent opportunity to work on the forefront of new power management designs and technologies with the exemplary company consistently bringing innovations in the industry. In this position, you will be part of pride developing innovative designs, which are implemented in products used by millions of people. The position primarily involves high-density offline power supply’s development for Apple’s next generation Macintosh platforms spanning from notebook computers, desktop computers, servers, standalone displays and Apple TV.
The suspicion behind Apple's latent admission of a forthcoming television product is rooted in Apple's separation of ”Apple TV” from “standalone displays.” If true, the forthcoming offering will confirm the lucrative prognostications of Mr. Munster, who said only a few weeks ago that "while Apple's commitment to the living room remains a 'hobby,' we continue to believe the company will enter the TV market with a full focus, as an all-in-one Apple television could move the needle when connected TVs proliferate."

50 inch is too little for the living room. I have a 52 in my room... they better come up with bigger screens or I won't be getting it

"Standalone displays" couldn't be referring to their computer monitors?

I hope they make a 50" Plasma Apple TV, I'd pay no more than $5000USD depending on its contrast ratio and viewing angles, if they make a TV that can achieve pure blacks, I will be the first to buy it otherwise its Japanese tech for me except Apple of course :P

There is nothing in there that even remotely suggests Apple are getting into the TV market. Displays are monitors and Apple TV is just that, the Apple TV.

Are you serious Messany! This is the most blatant case of "seeing what you want to see"

He seemed to have lost his way after the Verizon iPhone was officially announced, but it appears he's finally returned. Nice to know I can finally go back to ignoring him again.

So I assume if I advertise for a post for someone with experience in battery design then, because both my clock and my car require batteries, that means I'm trying to build the delorean from back to the future

I think we are all jumping to conclusions on this one. "Stand Alone Display" can be taken a dozen different ways...time will tell :]

I think they are referring to the monitors you would buy for a Mac Mini, or Mac Pro... Which they do offer right now.

I don't see Apple getting into the TV market. You can go to Walmart and get 52" LED TVs for under $1,500, Vizio alone would kill Apple's chances of getting any market share.

The days of people spending $8,000 on a TV are gone... At least until they introduce 3D Holographic TVs, lol.

I mean did he not turn to anyone or another MMi writer and ask what they think standalone display means? If he did ask the other writers then this site has complete collapsed in credibility

F*** O** Essany, standalone displays = computer monitors.
Apple TV = a little box that sits under your tv.

      Numb nuts.

Leave the reporting to the amoebas, they are smarter than you.

      This guy needs a ban.

I can't wait to jailbreak my (Apple?) TV (3?) and unlock so I can use its internal dvr with another service provider that won't be on apples approved list.

It sure sounds like you are overcompensating for a certain 'small' thing money can't make bigger.

Seriously? Have you ever made a mistake in your life? I know you have, and I'm positive you wouldn't want someone calling you names or saying things about you because of it! So just leave it alone, you don't have to read the articles if you don't want to.

Outside of that I hope that Apple does come out with a TV, that would be pimp!

It will probably be way overpriced. If it is I will never buy it.

There's no service providers (unless you mean content from besides the iTunes Store).
