  • Sony Dishes Out 'Lifetime Ban' to Known Hackers

This week, electronics giant Sony began dishing out lifetime bans to known PlayStation 3 hackers. The "ban" in question effectively bars any and all identified PS3 hackers from using Sony's online services for the rest of their lives. Pretty harsh, indeed. But over the course of the last 72 hours, countless PS3 hackers identified by Sony have begun receiving e-mail notices from Sony, a communication promptly followed by a full and irrevocable PlayStation 3 console ban. In order to avoid the dreaded Sony blacklist, hackers are required to "immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from their PlayStation 3 systems."

The writing, however, has been on the wall for some time. According to the official word on the PlayStation blog: "Violation of the system software license agreement for the PlayStation 3 System invalidates the consumer guarantee for that system. In addition, copying or playing pirated software is a violation of international copyright laws. Consumers using circumvention devices or running unauthorized or pirated software will have access to the PlayStation Network and access to Qriocity services through PlayStation 3 system terminated permanently."

Naturally, many are wondering if Sony's crackdown on hackers foreshadows how Apple will deal with iOS jailbreakers in the future, particularly with regard to the forthcoming 5th generation iPhone. Although there is no concrete evidence to confirm such theories, many believe Apple's hardcore crackdown on jailbreaking and unlocking will begin in earnest this year, effectively following the lead of Sony and others who refuse to play nicely with members of our community.

According to coverage provided this week by CNET, "a majority of commenters" to Sony's blog heralding the lifetime hacker ban "seem pleased" by Sony's decisive action. "Thanks for acknowledging this officially. Good to know Sony is not just hoping that this goes away," one poster wrote, adding "Thank You Sony! Ban these punks!" On the other hand, there were adamant defenders of the prohibited behavior. "If Sony actually took the time to know what us (the consumers) wanted, maybe they would see less piracy," a hacker-friendly poster wrote. "I mean the whole reason hackers want to hack the PSP Go is to play games that are still only available in UMD only."

To everyone talking about cheating online con MW2 or SOCOM. Those hacks are done via savegame exploits. The jailbreak has nothing to do with the cheating. In fact I doubt the ban will touch the cheaters, only people using cfw and homebrew programs unsigned by sony will be banned from the PSN. I'm pretty sure the cheating will still go on.

There are many ways the devs can prevent hacking on the multiplayer games.
Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Keep on hoping; Sony will be just fine.
No, that would just inflate more Piracy, therefor ******* them over.

I'm a 'wannabe' hacker just so I can get all the guns, thats hardly ruining the experience for everyone else. Compare it to a legit lvl70 and an one that is modded, Its not ruining the experience of the player. Infections are the nasty things.. You can use an M16 at like 3 bullets at .1 of a second.

As for deranking I think its down right asshattery, I understand people have played the game for like 9 days straight just to be 3rd Prestige.

Best way to do it. As for Sony, I hope they continue to lose business. "Ban for life"? Sony is a joke. Good to see the playing filed is no level between MS and Sony.

I have no problem users ranking up simply to enjoy the game via guns extra custom classes that's cool. You can tell just by playing which users hacked their prestige cause they suck for what level their at . But when modders go invisible and got the nerv to talk like their legit at the game pisses me off.

Wasn't the jailbreak the key that allowed for the custom patches to be downloaded in the first place? Or just a coincidence?

everyone is getting confused as to what they are actually doing, visit a gaming forum on sony dot com and really read as to what this is all about. this has nothing to do with geo hot and stuff like that. it has to deal with modded files and people cheating horrendously on video games like socom and call of duty

ban the people making modded items in game, but leave the ps3 modders alone!

and yes this does involve geohot since he is the one who jailbroke the ps3...and they're doing it for power and money.

Maybe to soon to say but I didn't see anyone in a game with an "unbound" clan tag or {@@} so MW2 might be playable again.

Don't bet on it. Sony has been loosing money for years now. This maybe the worse decision they have ever made.

My sig says it all for me. I don't condone mods to help you win online games, piracy of any kind. There are other ways to fight it than to ban someone for life.

As for the idevices, Apple would be complete idiots to ban people for jailbreaking the device. Nothing I do with my jailbroken iphone hurts Apple, AT&T or anyone else. I pay for any app I want through cydia or the appstore (except free apps). I buy or rent movies, I pay for the services I use from AT&T. They have lost nothing because I jailbroke my phone.

I know it's the law, but it's pathetic. It's like selling someone an Orange and telling them what to do with it..
You got that orange from somewhere else. Sorry no outside food or drink allowed in my resturaunt.

That's what Sony is doing. It's your orange but don't bring it on their network.

      +20!

Don't forget, a lot of (probably most) people here don't do much in the way of gaming, so they wouldn't have a need to go to a gaming forum.

To the person who quoted me and said "let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater:

I could care less if they jailbreak. It would be hypocritical of me to say they shouldn't. I've modded all of my computers in some way, and I've modded countless games. I never played those mods online though, with the exception of Starcraft and C&C. We were on private servers, and all running the same mod.

My problem is, when they do it to cheat an online game, on the main servers, with regular players. They deserve to get banned, because it ruins the game for honest players.

I have no problem with them having mods/cheats in a private session.

Agreed. Cheat all you want in a private game/ LAN party. Odds are if you're usin mods, so is everyone else playing with you. But keep it there. Don't take it online, and ruin it for legit players.

How is it a lifetime ban? Sony cannot stop you going out and buying another PS3 and creating a new PSN account.

ok like others have said its fine to mod in private games but you dont have to jailbreak to have mods so banning you for jailbreaking isnt going to do anything! if they would be able to find out who is modding for online cheating and ban them then that would be just fine but saying o your jailbroken time to ban you is stupid and if enuf people got band that bought stuff off their store or rented movies or use their new streaming service then they would end up hurting themselves in the long run i for one buy tons of stuff on there and even if i was jailbroken i still would i dont pirate games or do online game modding so they would have nothing to fear for me jailbreaking and like said before you can do online game modding with out jailbreaking

I f**king hope apple do this for "installious" users!

Not for jailbreakers, just installious users.

I don't care that you paid 500 etc for your iPhone, using installious is just f**king stealing! Scum! The lot o ya's!

      Rant over.

Now, please continue to talk about how you paid so much for your toy, and how you want to "try" before you buy. Just f**k off!

To my knowledge, MS will ban your XBOX, not your actual id, nor you, as a person, from using their services. Not saying MS is right here either, but Sony has taken what MS has done up another couple levels.

You aren't using Apple's services to log into anything. Well, maybe Mobile Me, but to the vast majority of users that wouldn't be a loss at all. Sony isn't rendering this hardware useless, just banning gamer tags. HUGE difference.

The other issue here is that Sony isn't going after JUST the pirates. They basically made a blanket statement that all modders are banned. Still, I suppose they have the right to refuse service to anyone they please being that you do not own your gamertag or any of that online information.

You're right, but then you just spend more money buying a new one, (supporting Sony) when you had a perfectly good console in the first place. It just sucks either way!

Modded xboxs get banned too, I don't understand how one is better than the other in this standpoint.

People, if you agreed to the terms of use, then you violated them when you hacked your console. You don't exactly deserve to have you console permabanned, but technically youre breaking the rules. You knew the risks - deal with the consequences. If you want to change the way it works, then design your own console and let any tom **** and harry hacker come along and exploit vulnerabilities that 99.8 percent of the public could care less about. Sure, hacking is not just about piracy, but stop fooling yourselves - anyone who cant actually hack is just looking for free sh!t. If its not true than explain why there currently 2400 seeders for Black Ops...

It irritates me the people who hold such powerful minds are so shortsighted in their ambitions that they ruin what should be fun for the rest of us. If you're so 1337 with your ***xors (what f*cking ever), then stop wasting your time on screwing up the sanctity video game consoles and start chewing on something that would help more than than your web penis.

They should be saving our space program, not allowing 13 year olds to headshot me through walls with a damned G18.

EDIT - Ill redact my statement - not all are purely pirates - but most - 80 percent I'd wager, are. For the rest of those intrepid souls who mod for the hell of it - Your enthusiasm is noted, but build a PC if you want to mod. Its the only hackable thing you can own nowadays.
