  • Mac App Store Welcomes First Official Microsoft Application

On Monday, we covered Apple's increasingly close relationship with rival Samsung as a prime example of how modern mobile technologies make for strange bed fellows. Another appropriate illustration of this commonplace reality surfaced again today, as Microsoft formally unveiled it's first official application for the Mac App Store.

Wednesday marked the release of the Windows Phone 7 Connector application, an official Microsoft production that makes it possible - and relatively simple, to sync content between WP7 devices and Mac OS X computers. In terms of a first application on OS X, it's not an unimpressive debut for Microsoft, which continues to ramp up its competitive aim at Apple and, in particular, the iPhone.

The app (2.6MB download) requires a Windows Phone 7 device (any carrier will do) or your Zune HD, and, as expected, a computer running Mac OS X 10.6.6 or higher. The syncing feature outlined above is pretty comprehensive (although you can't sync calendars and contacts) and works very smoothly. As mentioned, the Windows Phone 7 Connector syncs a variety of multimedia - from music to pics - between your WP7 mobile device and your Mac. You can even upload to your WP7 phone the music you've downloaded from iTunes.

Windows Phone 7 Connector application is available now in the Mac App Store.

Competition is what gets us these amazing products... if everyone put aside their differences we would still be having RAZR's as the top phone and 500 RAZR lookalikes...

Good to see Microsoft supporting Windows Phone 7 users who are also Mac users. Nice simplistic GUI too by the looks of it.

I take it you dont use Mac OS X much?
Many many Apps have a unified look and feel about them. It's actually encouraged that Mac developers make their Apps have a similar look to them. There are so many Apps with that similar GUI of a devices panel on the left and a simply large panel on the right

I guess that kind of explains why iTunes on Windows sucks like no other software in the world. Windows doesn't have those API's I guess.

It's good to see them working together on something. The app looks clean and smooth, that's how Apple rolls!

WHY is this not bigger news then if that's the case???!? People have been trying to use Zunes on a Mac since the original one and have never found a way.

Because not many people use Zunes? (especially Mac users )

Doesn't WP7 already have Zune, a paid but still WP7 equivalent of iTunes? or is it only for Windows?

BTW:I cant believe Microsoft would actually buy a Mac to develop that application.

It's about time! I figured MS would've forced Apple to accept their app (maybe they did). After all, Apple is indebted to them for life!!!

That was unexpected. At least Zune users will be happy now.

Wow! I can't believe the ignorance of some of the people here. Try using wikipedia once in a while.

MS has a complete and very succesful Mac division. Where do you think Office for mac comes from?
MS Word was developed for Mac many years before the windows version. Well before MS Windows even existed.

Oh and back on topic, I see this app being useful for people who have a Windows phone from work and a Mac at home. But which Mac user would ever buy a WP7 phone themselves?

No, it's just time for you to stop whining about your old computer and get with the times. iTunes runs very well on my Acer laptop, running Windows 7.
