  • Apple TV gets Untethered Jailbreak with Greenpois0n RC6

Greenpois0n has just been updated to RC6. This is the first version of Greenpois0n to be untethered on a second generation Apple TV. Pervious versions of Greenpois0n have been untethered on other iOS devices, but this is the first one that doesnít require you to have it connected to computer when you want to restart the device. You can safely put your Apple TV to sleep and know itíll still be jailbroken when you turn it on the next day.

A nice addition to this version of Greenpois0n is that it loads NitoTV onto your Apple TV during the installation process. You no longer have to use the Terminal window to get it loaded onto your Apple TV anymore. Currently, this is about the only addition you can make to an Apple TV, at least until Apple decides to open an App Store for the Apple TV. Steve Jobs has hinted at the possibility of opening an App Store but only if and when the time is right.

As always, proceed with caution when installing jailbreaks such as this. The current version of Greenpois0n RC6 is still considered to be in beta. There have been a few reports of people running into issues with Wi-Fi and booting. As Apple continues to develop the device, jailbreaks like Greenpois0n will mature and give us more choices as to how we use our Apple TVs. I canít wait to get more content streaming to that shinny little hockey puck sitting next to my TV.

Air play is tight. Appletv is useless if you own a ps3, xbox360, a computer!!!! Apple puts out good products don't get me wrong, this is not their best. It's not better than ruko box, boxee box, ps3 xbox360. You have many of them cause youre a dumb fan boy. If apple fed you a crap and told you it was chicken you would say this is the best chicken I've ever eaten. Open your mind up. I own apple products, but if something is better why wouldn't use that. Cause you're a moron!!!!

I tried it without the power cable and it said it was complete, but it is not actually jailbroken.
I sure hope a new Pwnage Tool shows up soon.

I tried going on top of Seas0nPass. It doesn't work, Greenpois0n will just fail. You have to factory restore it to 4.2.1 then run GP. The GP countdown didn't work for me, however. I plugged the USB in, waited for the light to flash more rapidly, then plugged in the power cord followed by pressing the two buttons on the remote. GP should find it in DFU and go from there. Remember to wait 40 or so seconds after it says "Complete" though, as its not timed correctly.

Yes it does work, just finally got it working myself after more tries than I'd like to admit. You can tell its definitely not a final release, but it does work so props to the team for that! The other persons advice about ignoring the timing when your inserting the usb and power cables is what finally worked for me. Tried it numerous times without the power cable (since thats the only way I could previously get it to work) but the new menu options never showd up. But it eventually worked great, just keep trying.

-upon release of the play/pause and menu it looks like its trying to JB then after about 30 sec it returnts FAIDED

Booted to windows from my hackintosh. Took several tries then suddenly the jailbreak button lite up . Loaded all the goodies and checking out xbmc.

I actually had to jailbreak mine without using the power cord. Greenpoison crashed during jailbreak if I had the power connected. Worked fine without it. To enter DFU mode, hold MENU + Down Button for 7 secs and then let go for split second and switch to MENU + play/pause for about 5 seconds.

You are comparing a $99 product with $300-$400 products? lol Why stop there? Why not say it sucks compared to a Mac Pro hooked up to your tv?

AppleTv is one of the cheapest hardware products to bring Netflix and movie rentals to your tv. It also has a great UI that pwns most others attempts.

Airplay is something none of the other products listed can do and adds tons of media options. I love being able to walk into any room of my house and listen to my whole iTunes library (300 GBs).

Sure there are options you can purchase to allow PS3 and xbox to sort of have this feature but they are not done near as well and don't work for mac owners.

Furthermore, if you can't express yourself without insults, I will show you the door. I will not except your insults for me or any other member of this site. Good day.

Plex Media Server....Install it on both your mac and apple tv, point it to the folders that contain your media and the apple tv will play any of it. File extension doesn't matter like with iTunes, and you don't have to encode all of your movies and tv shows into iTunes! That's why I use it. I don't give a rip about the weather

Plex is the main reason at the moment

You can't use plex with a AirDisk or time capsule at this point, right? Because all my movies are on an airport extreme connected hard drive. I don't want my whole house to rely on my laptop being home and turned on to stream videos.

Oh and if you have windows, you can get hulu and other streaming stuff on your appletv with PlayOn

I don't know about time capsule specifically. I AM using it with an external hd hooked up to my airport extreme though. Basically, if your mac can read the content on the drive plex can index it. You just point it to the folder on that drive and it will pick it up when the computer is on that network. I assume time capsule would work the same way, I just don't have one to test it.

It's mainly the laptop always on issue. I don't want to rely on my computer as an intermediary. It shouldn't have to.

Xbmc solves this for me. I just wish we didn't need to open up an entirely different multimedia interface to stream videos from a hard drive. Although in sure afp network support will come.

That makes sense...the majority of my work is done on my laptop....its always on so I don't mind using plex at all.

My appletv is the multimedia center of my house with 4 other college grads. If it were just me, plex would be totally perfect.
