  • Apple TV gets Untethered Jailbreak with Greenpois0n RC6

Greenpois0n has just been updated to RC6. This is the first version of Greenpois0n to be untethered on a second generation Apple TV. Pervious versions of Greenpois0n have been untethered on other iOS devices, but this is the first one that doesnít require you to have it connected to computer when you want to restart the device. You can safely put your Apple TV to sleep and know itíll still be jailbroken when you turn it on the next day.

A nice addition to this version of Greenpois0n is that it loads NitoTV onto your Apple TV during the installation process. You no longer have to use the Terminal window to get it loaded onto your Apple TV anymore. Currently, this is about the only addition you can make to an Apple TV, at least until Apple decides to open an App Store for the Apple TV. Steve Jobs has hinted at the possibility of opening an App Store but only if and when the time is right.

As always, proceed with caution when installing jailbreaks such as this. The current version of Greenpois0n RC6 is still considered to be in beta. There have been a few reports of people running into issues with Wi-Fi and booting. As Apple continues to develop the device, jailbreaks like Greenpois0n will mature and give us more choices as to how we use our Apple TVs. I canít wait to get more content streaming to that shinny little hockey puck sitting next to my TV.

This is awesome. I can't wait to do this to mine. The only thing I don't know how to do is what kind of cable do I need to attach it to my computer. Also where can I get one? Thanks

Plex media center works on ATV2. Also allows for 1080p content

Micro USB cable. You should be able to get one at radioshack or best buy

Greenpois0n RC6 kills wi-fi on aTV. Until that's fixed its a useless hockey puck unless you have an ethernet port next to your TV.

An app store store for atv would definitely be a huge and welcome improvement but without any(or very little) on-board storage I can't see that happening on this version. Unless I'm mistaken.

I own one but it is rarely used. Netflix in Canada has a measly 15% of American content and we are unable to rent television shows over iTunes due to our version of the FCC being insecure dickwads. And even with a fast Internet connection any hd movie I rent from iTunes has to buffer every few minutes so it's not worth my time. Netflix movies on the other hand play flawlessly if you enjoy obscure ‘B' movies from the 90's. At first I was excited to recognize some of my favorite movies as a child until I realized I had horrible taste in movies when I was 10.

What I would like to see either with jail-breaking or an apple update is a web browser. If apple really wants to take over the living room they need useful features on this sweet looking puck. Or the ability to stream not just audio and video from my iPhone, but whatever is on the screen. I don't have an iPad(yet) so using safari or any other app on my iphone and being able to see the page in real time on my tv would be awesome. Though with current technologies I can't see that happening any time soon.

True question. Don't see the point, believe a Mac mini is much better of a media hub. With the ability to watch stream shows on JtV and watching movies in any format.

Well, if apple opens the app store, then I'll "jump into the fire"

But my question is something else. Can you run greenpoison over the top of the seasonpass jailbreak that was released previously? See, I don't want to lose the plex install I have on it. I know I can reinstall it, but I would rather just leave everything in place and just update the install so it is untethered.

      The devs are saying no.

As to the appletv vs mac mini debate...$99 is a lot cheaper than the cost of a mac mini and it's a lot more friendly for people who don't want to sit with a trackpad/mouse and keyboard to control their tv. For me, the inconvenience and cost of a mac mini far outweighs the extra few things it would allow me to do that appletv doesn't.
