  • Apple TV gets Untethered Jailbreak with Greenpois0n RC6

Greenpois0n has just been updated to RC6. This is the first version of Greenpois0n to be untethered on a second generation Apple TV. Pervious versions of Greenpois0n have been untethered on other iOS devices, but this is the first one that doesnít require you to have it connected to computer when you want to restart the device. You can safely put your Apple TV to sleep and know itíll still be jailbroken when you turn it on the next day.

A nice addition to this version of Greenpois0n is that it loads NitoTV onto your Apple TV during the installation process. You no longer have to use the Terminal window to get it loaded onto your Apple TV anymore. Currently, this is about the only addition you can make to an Apple TV, at least until Apple decides to open an App Store for the Apple TV. Steve Jobs has hinted at the possibility of opening an App Store but only if and when the time is right.

As always, proceed with caution when installing jailbreaks such as this. The current version of Greenpois0n RC6 is still considered to be in beta. There have been a few reports of people running into issues with Wi-Fi and booting. As Apple continues to develop the device, jailbreaks like Greenpois0n will mature and give us more choices as to how we use our Apple TVs. I canít wait to get more content streaming to that shinny little hockey puck sitting next to my TV.

I have two Apple TV's and love them. For $99 I can watch Netflixs in the bedroom or livingroom, etc. I have a launch model that has been jailbroken and has ATVflash Black on it, and the second is from x-mas so it is on the newer previously non-jailbreakable iOS. I want to try the GP but some have said you lose WiFi and the video up a 2 post shows a power cord being used. I have never had to plug in the power cable to JB my other ATV. Is this a GP thing? The WiFi issue is my biggest issue. SO of those of you that used GP on your ATV, did it work... WiFi and all?

I found this in the XBMC forum, and I can confirm it worked for me. You need to know how to connect to your AppleTV via ssh. Note that if wifi is not working, you will need to connect your AppleTV via ethernet:

SSH in to your AppleTV, then:

      apt-get update

      apt-get remove com.nito.nitotv

      apt-get install com.nito.nitotv

      killall AppleTV

Right now there's not too much outside of NitoTV and Plex, but there will be a lot of great things coming. I'm not sure if Cydia is out for it yet, but that'll be nice.

One quick question! Why MyWi doesn't work with the apple tv? It doesnt recognize it as a hotspot

Well, if apple opens the app store, then I'll "jump into the fire"
a Mac Mini would be a much better media hub but the price difference is a bit much, especially if you just want to stream media content from your current mac

I have tried this as well. I don't think aTV supports adhoc networks.

Is this gonna work for both Mac and windows? I have mine next to my tv so can I just plug it in to my router with Ethernet for it to work with wifi.

why would you say that? Airplay alone is more than enough of a reason to own one.

Its a great device and I have several of them.

      Because he is ignorant.

I have been trying unsuccessfully to jailbreak my ATV2. Either it crashes when it attempts to JB it, it starts then fails, or it will not go into DFU.

I have had to mess around with past JB methods but this is ridicules.

I am having the same problem on my Mac. either the app crashes or it starts to jailbreak, then the Jailbreaking button turns to Failed

is there a firmware that is too new for JB? I got my ATV2 around xmas.

Possible downgrade if this is the case? or shsh will have me screwed to downgrade?.

I'm about to try the windows version.

      im having the same problem.

-when i got to the About section it says 4.1.1 and if i say update, atv2 says its up to date.
-launch greenpois0n and say Yes for atv2. follow the steps it says to do
-upon release of the play/pause and menu it looks like its trying to JB then after about 30 sec it returnts FAIDED

      thoughts?

Ok here's the deal. The JB will not work on a Hackintosh.

I used windows JB instead. Failed first time. Used GP without power cord attached ( skipped that step ) and just the mini usb, and it worked.

Guess it's the same rule, iTunes won;t recognize the device with the power cord attached. Hope this helps someone!

Sorry for off topic... but I saw that RC5 can jailbreak the Verizon iphone, can this new RC6 do it as well? Just want to be safe before I try, need my MyWii back! Just cancelled Sprint and came back to my iPhone after a year's absence!
