  • Netgear Boss Blasts Apple Chief Steve Jobs

So much for having compassion for Apple chief Steve Jobs during his latest medical leave of absence. On Monday, Netgear CEO Patrick Lo went on a verbal rampage against Apple and its founding father Steve Jobs. Blasting the company and Jobs over their corporate atmosphere of secrecy inside an already tightly closed business model, Lo did not mince words as he predicted Apple's ultimate demise.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Lo was speaking at a luncheon in Sydney, Australia when his rant began - a tirade that hailed the eventual failure of Apple because of its closed platform. "Ultimately a closed system just can't go that far," Lo suggested. "If they continue to close it and let Android continue to creep up then it's pretty difficult as I see it." Lo, however, didn't just spout off with examples of his theory. Referencing Betamax and VHS, in one instance, Lo's speech was teeming with examples of how open platforms commonly prevail over their closed counterparts. The Netgear chief says Apple has to "find a way to open up iTunes without giving too much away on their revenue generation model." Lo says Steve Jobs "wants to suffocate the distribution so even though he doesn't own the content he could basically demand a ransom."

Once Steve Jobs goes away, which is probably not far away, then Apple will have to make a strategic decision on whether to open up the platform.
In particular, the comment from Lo referencing the prospect of Jobs "going away" has been widely criticized given Jobs' current medical leave. In April 2009, Jobs underwent a liver transplant. At the time, his prognosis was "excellent." But earlier this month, just one and a half years after Jobs returned from his liver transplant, Apple announced Jobs' latest medical leave, raising questions about the Apple boss and just how healthy he really is - or isn't. Lo, however, didn't express much personal concern for Steve Jobs. And although Lo never mentioned Jobs' health, he did mention Jobs' ego. "What's the reason for him to trash Flash?" Lo asked. "There's no reason other than ego." Lo was also certain to mention that he's never had an opportunity to voice his concerns directly to Apple's CEO. "Steve Jobs doesn't give me a minute," Lo stated.

I have to agree with the overall gist of this article in that Apple could stand to be a little more open and quit being so proprietary. The "attack" on Jobs may be a little premature yet.

There are reasons beyond ego to trash flash, and Jobs certainly isn't the only one doing that.

Apple seems to have done very well the way it has operated in the past. Maybe Steve knows a lot more than you want to give him credit for!

Why do so many people believe a closed platform is inferior? I've yet to see any Android OS apps/capabilities out do the Apple iOS...have you??? Please show me some valid examples and i'll run with it. Until then get off Apples NUTS. Apple is successful because they build superior products and market them with intelligence PERIOD!!

I'm glad you have a deep understanding of the pricing behind stocks.

I personally think that Apple has gotten pretty far with their setup, but I don't know how much further than can go. Opening up now might be that Gotcha moment that throws them for an even more wild ride and into even greater success. The closed market didn't work for them for the first 20? years.

he needs (not wants) us to buy his inferior equipment and knows how much of a loyal following Apple has. Dear Mr. Lo - YOU FAIL!!

      Agreed.
I don't even know why there is a fight between closed and open. It doesn't make any sense to me.

Apple's OS you can literally do anything you want after jailbreaking it, much more so than Android will be capable of, ever.

All companies try to make phones with "superior" hardware, yet don't realize software is the key. And Apple's software always triumphs that Android trash.
I mean seriously, how does a phone with 5 mp (iphone) have better pictures than the 8 mp droids etc etc? How does a phone with a slower processor have better multi touch capabilities (iphone) than any of the jerky/sluggish screens that all Android phones have? I could go on and on and on. Android will never beat Apple's "closed" software. They will never outsell Apple's hardware, they will not get anywhere even if something happens to Steve Jobs.

Way to kick someone while he's down... I'd have a closed business model as well if everything I make gets (bad) copies made each time you put time and research into a product.

The quieter they are with the products they release the longer it takes the competition to catch up. It's not like they are doing something that is anti-competitive, they are simply protecting their hard work.

Apples platforms have good potential but are limited by controls and restrictions. Jailbreaking iOS shows it's true potential

I like the way app operates but I do wish steve jobs would stop closing all the jailbreak loopholes. I understand he does it to protect app store profits as well as security so people are less inclined to write viruses and trojans for ios but there needs to be a happy medium and I don't think sj will give up any ground.

The reason to to say that flash is going the way of the dinosaur was not rooted in ego - it was fact and no one with a modicum of forward thinking will disagree. But until HTML5 becomes the dominant vehicle for web media - Flash should still be supported. Even if they just disrespected it and called it "legacy" support.

Not supporting it at all reaks of ego-trippin' to me.

As fas as Apple's future without Jobs - I agree. There are many people with the knowhow to make great products. But without the ringleader/firestarter that Jobs is, I believe Apple products & designs will sink (Regress is perhaps a better word) back to the dreaded "ho-hum" status that so many of its competitors suffer from. At that point, the only thing that would justify the price premium is their marketing campaigns.

Any one see Ratatouille ? Its kinda like when the head chef of that restaurant died, and his understudy just slapped his name on a bunch of frozen dinners and totally ruined the vibe.
