  • AppleTV Gets It's First Jailbroken App: NitoTV

It didn't take long for our jailbroken AppleTV's to get rocking with custom Apps. The first app to come to AppleTV is called nitoTV.

nitoTV is a front end application for the popular mplayer media player. Using perian and Apple's DVDPlayback.framework, users can create playlists and add files or folders of their choice.

So what else does NitoTV do? Well it's more than just a media player. Supposedly you can even use NitoTV to play nes, snes, genesis, game gear and gameboy advanced roms, view RSS feeds and 3-day Weather forecasts.

At this point, you should be able to play almost any media file type. However, the installation process might have the unexperienced scratching their head. You will be required to SSH the files over to your AppleTV.

Note: The current installer packages are NOT for AppleTV 2, but the original AppleTV. At the moment the only portion for AppleTV 2 is the weather portion. Don't get too excited just yet.

While not everything is working 100%, this is still a big step forward for Apps on the AppleTV. NitoTV has tweeted "oh and ill do my best to have a basic nitoTV out soon with at least Weather and RSS feeds working.. other stuff will take longer.". So expect some updates in the near future for nitoTV.

Grab the installer and read more below:

I am sure by the time jailbreaking an apple tv is worthwhile there will be a windows jailbreak for it.

Does TV have Bluetooth for non-Apple TV remotes? I would hate to play Mario with audio controls

Boy, you haven't been on the scene long. Installer had over 300 apps and tweaks available before Apple even announced an App Store or an SDK. There are a lot more smart people in the world than you might think.

This was available on ModMyI's very own repository before Apple even announced an App Store: http://www.touchpodium.com/2008/04/1...an-3d-puzzler/

Oh god, I'm on the same page, too. If it supports Bluetooth, then a Wii remote can be used.

      I want TV now!

It would be nice if the jailbreak community could find a way to access and use hardware video acceleration. It would be nice if Apple provided such low-level hardware access to devs, it would really allow for much better performance for third party apps in a number of cases; audio/vid enc/dec, cryptography and much more! I don't know if it's been done yet for current iDevices by the community but I'm inclined to think that it probably hasn't... Can't wait to see more apps for the ATV2. I'm betting with mobiles substrate and mouse support(I remember in the days of 3.x some clever dec was able to implement BT keyboards and mice... I'm pretty sure the mouse tweak was free too!) either way I can see some real cool stuff right around the corner!

lawl, i've probably been in the 'scene' longer than you have.. notice my join date here, which was long after i'd been lurking. you know how often i post here because i see yours all the time including the iOS 4 compat thread. nice try though.

i realize there were apps and tweaks before the appstore, i've been jailbreaking since what, 1.1.2? and remember the tiff userland exploits and whatnot. that's not my point. the atv was JUST jailbroken days ago, nobody has had time to port mplayer and an entire series of emulators.. how would you even control it considering noone's unlocked bluetooth yet? i have a very good feel for how long these things take now. the screenshot didn't even show any of that, so i called bs. jesus, people in here hop on a high horse so easily. you didn't even know the thing has a bluetooth chipset in it.

i've said before.. next year steve's gonna magically unlock bluetooth and have an official way to control atv with iphone, and suddenly he's created the first $99 hd gaming console and it's already in your living room. there are big plans for steve's "hobby", folks.

Who gives a **** about join dates? No one has even port or create crap to the TV since it is new to the jailbreak. Great, now my Ignore List of Stupidity is going...
