  • Evad3rs: We Are Still Working on the iOS 7 Jailbreak

In case you're in need of reassurance that an iOS 7 jailbreak is still being worked on, look no further than the recently-spoken words of iOS hacker Nikias Bassen (pimskeks), one of the hackers involved with the evad3rs hacker team.

He explains that the evad3rs are still working on the jailbreak and asks for patience. As we could imagine, the team is probably getting pummeled by questions about ETAs and progress.

iOS 7 was released in September, and users are patiently awaiting a jailbreak to start customizing their devices just like they were able to in the iOS 6 days. Many jailbreakers are still on iOS 6 as they continue to preserve the jailbreak that they already have.

Since the initial release of iOS 7, Apple has released a number of updates to the operating system, which fix bugs and security issues, but even the latest version of iOS, version 7.0.3, is susceptible to a jailbreak, as iOS hacker MuscleNerd pointed out near the end of October:

While even the latest version of iOS 7 is vulnerable to the exploits that the evad3rs have been tinkering with, Apple still has a variety of updates planned for iOS that will be out in the future. iOS 7.0.4 has been gaining traction in Web logs, and iOS 7.1 is still in the middle of internal testing. We would recommend holding off on these updates until the evad3rs have had a chance to confirm the safety of upgrading.

While today’s Tweet from pimskeks doesn’t go into any vivid detail, it does let us know that the iOS 7 jailbreak is still being diligently worked on and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. A lot of work goes into creating a jailbreak, including testing all of the available devices, creating a tool that the average user can operate, and ensuring that the jailbreak is stable enough to release to the public.

We continue to offer thanks to the developers that make jailbreaking possible and with them the best of luck in succeeding.

Donating to say thanks is one thing, donating in advance is a really silly idea.

On this point we entirely agree. And I think that the devs have been very good about telling people please don't donate yet. And that also gives a lot of weight to the notion that we, "the waiting public," should not be overly demanding since we really haven't "hired" them prior to the release of a jailbreak. I know that makes my original argument a little weaker, that they're "well paid". But I have to be fair to them. My respect stays very very high for them, in no small part, because of their not accepting donations ahead of time.

Why wait ? Release a JB for iP 5s.
      All other devices can wait.
iP 5s is the Flagship and the JB is long overdo.
There have been many a jailbreak that did not
cover all devices or iOSs at the same time.
This wait will have us the JB for iP 5s for a few
months and then Apple will release iP 6 and a new
wait begins. Just a big waste of time.

Why wait? Because its not ready.
Many jailbreaks that did not cover all devices? Name one.

Earlier devices with boot exploits that were not usable
      by newer devices. For example.

      Ragebreak
Greenpoison was initially only for Verizon devices.

Many? Greenpois0n was a strainge one, designed for devices no one else could be bothered with.
Any mainstream JBs have been for all devices although some work better for older devices where exploits are left open.
Even BlackSn0w was released for all devices despite my advice to release it for all except the 3G - that was the only release I disagreed with but it was not my call.

Yes, I'm sure that Verizon phones are ones that no one should be bothered with, as they are such a small market.

And iph4 are another small market.

Maybe they should just do the 5s, as it seems that's all that's important.

You asked for one example and I gave you 2, but that still doesn't please you.

Huh? Greenpoison worked for more than the verizon iphone didn't it? Been awhile since then though, memories escape me. Wasn't that when we had 3 choices for jailbreaks? All using limerain exploit right?

Yes. You're right. And much to the surprise of everyone - iOS5's JB came out on GreenPois0n first - before any other tool. So it was the tool for most phones on the main 4.2.1JB and then also the main JB tool for 5.1.1..

I remember someone trying to make the point in those days of the 5.1.1JB that the only reason GreenPois0n was the "first/main" tool was because the jailbreak dev team gave it to GP for the quickest public tool possible.. trying to imply that there wasn't anything special about GP. Though I always thought the GP tool was the easiest tool to use.. There were always a lot more windows and questions the RedSn0w tool would ask you.. GP was always no fuss no muss.

Absinthe was the iOS 5 jailbreak. Greenpoison the 4.2.1 jailbreak.

Ah yes.. I stand corrected.. But wasn't absinthe a GreenPois0n-style tool? Made by the same folks?

Yup, it was. Hence the play on the name, absinthe being a kind of green poison lol.

Ah yes!! I knew it was 2 GP tools in a row.. After trying to use RedSn0w once and getting very confused, I just remember how relieved I was to see the GreenPois0n symbol in the Absinthe tool with 5.1.1 after loving how simple it was with 4.2.1.

Thx for being the reliable "historian" you always are, Simon!!

Jailbreakme was really cool to. Cause all you had to do was pop on safari from your phone. They had 2 versions of it

Yeah that was the coolest exploit IMO. I jailbroke an iPhone in a shop just by going in jailbreakme.com
AppleStores still blocks this URL nowadays.

There were two separate exploits - and when the domain was sold without being offered to the community there was some of the nastiest splits and wrangling des going on. Luckily saurick bought it back, otherwise, who knows what you could be downloading now!
