  • Dish Providing In-Flight Entertainment on Southwest Through Apple's iPad 2

Last week during the company's big unveiling of the new iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display, Apple confirmed that it plans to keep the iPad 2 available to consumers around the world.

With the iPad 2 still ranking as the world's most prevalent iPad, we are seeing more signs with each passing day as to why this is the case. Just today, in fact, Southwest announced that the airline, along with Dish, will begin providing passengers with in-flight entertainment through Apple's second generation tablet.

    From today's press release:

"With the holiday travel season fast approaching, we want to give travelers the chance to relax and enjoy their favorite programming, whether in the air on Southwest or on the ground through Dish Anywhere," said James Moorhead, Chief Marketing Officer at Dish. "We are excited to further our partnership with Southwest and provide a great entertainment experience through our iPad lending program."

We are told that the iPad 2 lending offer is free for all passengers traveling between MDW, DEN and OAK on WiFi-enabled Southwest flights.

Really? You have to have an iPad 2?? It should work with any iPad...I still can't believe that the iPad 3 isn't the most popular with the retina display, it's really cheap right now too.

Passengers "borrow" it from the flight crew and use it during the flight. The DirecTV software is pre-installed and probably not available to the public.

The devices are probably restricted and locked-down so only specific apps are usable.

      Hello ModMyI Members.
I am actually managing this activation at the Oakland Airport. DISH Network allows you to watch 15 channels of live TV for free while on your flight as well as a few episodes of select TV series.

We give you the option to 'Borrow' and iPad2 from us if you are flying to one of our other airports. You can simply return it to the booth attendants when you land.
Your laptop, apple, android, mobile device will be able to access the programming on the flight, we just offer you the ability to rent one if your battery is running low, if you want to use an iPad, you didn't bring any device with you.

The iPads are not locked down in anyway. They are standard iPads and you have the ability to watch the programming on it. if you wish to browse on the internet you will have to pay for it on the Southwest Flight (like you would have to do with any device).

We hope you swing on by and visit.

So are you saying that all other devices (that passengers bring) will be able to access the programming? So iPad 3/4/5, iPhone's, Android devices etc? Thanks.

Yes, any device (iDevices, Android, Laptop) that the Passenger already has that is capable of acessing the internet/viewing content (Not KindlePaperwhite as an example) will be able to view the content. You simply connect to the online internet and it gives you the option to Watch Live TV courtesy of Dish Network.
