  • Breaking: iPad Available April 3rd

Ending speculation that the long awaited tablet would be available this month, Apple today announced that the iPad will be formally rolled out on April 3rd. It won't be until late April, however, before US consumers can obtain the 3G models. According to Apple's announcement this morning, global availability similarly won't take place until later in April as well.

Global availability includes the iPad's release (in both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G models) in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. International pricing won't be announced until April. The iPad will make the rounds and ship to additional countries later in 2010.

As speculated previously on ModMyi, pre-orders will, in fact, be possible. Beginning March 12th, you can reserve your tablet either at the online store or at an Apple retail outlet.

“iPad is something completely new,” Steve Jobs said in the release. “We’re excited for customers to get their hands on this magical and revolutionary product and connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.”

Beginning April 3, the iBooks app will also arrive, in addition to Apple's iBook bookstore.

Well good for you mr. I'm such an apple fanboy that I make one of their products my user name. You'll be the coolest kid on the block because you have an ipad. And I wasn't just talking to you. No need to call names unless you can't find anythin else for your argument other than I want to own one. I pay cash too. I have money in the bank and don't use credit. Suck on that Jack ***

Do you know how easy it will be to sell the 1st gen ipad in a year for OVER $300? Probably more once they are jailbroken.

Get a clue, most of us upgrade and get rid of the old stuff...
You have a good point there. I too did sold my 3G on eBay and upgraded to an "s". Lol. I posted that last comment because he was bragging like he got it that good. Stay humble to a degree is what I meant to say...

I agree, a Saturday release does seem strange.

you represent a different type of consumer. i'm entering into my college years. i will be in constant debt for the next 10 years of my life, perhaps more.

not everyone is in your exact position
I hear you. I agree if you do not have the money to buy it then don't overextend yourself to get a luxury item. I made many sacrifices in the past and I know the feeling. But I think that people have brought up an interesting point that Apple products seem to retain much of their retail value. I typically am able to sell my iPhones, and Macbook Pros every year for at least 85% of the original purchasing price. The 15% or less that I lose is worth it to me because I maintain having a product that is under warranty and I can also have the latest upgrades of the product line.

Apple products have a great resale value. Some people that get them every year generally either break even or have to pay a tiny bit more out of pocket to get the next version. I have done this same thing. Sale the previous years model about a month or a couple weeks before the release of the new version. I plan on doing the same with the iPad too. I am also broke; I am not in college but I am paying back the loans now.

I was really hoping for the March 26th release as rumored but I can wait. It just be the first week of doing different shift work will be boring.

They probably held back the release date so that those who gave up their apple products for Lent can buy it. Lent ends on Easter, April 4th. So buy on the 3rd, use on the 4th.

      I don't want the iPad...

      .... I'm buying the iPad.

      Am I strange?

      ..... No.....

      .... I'm a fanboy.

But what apple does have control over is getting that stuff out of the way before announcing the product (or at least before setting release timetables). At the very least getting the FCC stuff taken care of.

Ha, anyone remember the whole AT&T MMS fiasco? They promised an end of summer rollout, and it the .ipcc update came out like 3 days after then end of summer. I don't remember reading anything anywhere about anyone being so forgiving about those 3 days.

Apple missed the advertised launch timetable, plain & simple. It is what it is. No more, no less.

They never really had an official launch date. And Apple did give MMS to the iPhone on 3.0 release. It was just ATT wasn't ready; every other country was and had MMS in 3.0.

Does anybody know if there is a limit on the pre-order? I need to order 4 of them for work and am wondering if I need to get one of my employees to help with that

For you college students out there, you don't make enough now to buy a new phone on a whim, but you will! Aaaand you'll be paying debt for a decade, so what's a phone or two added to that pile?
